Use of life cycle assessment for estimating impacts of waste-to-energy technologies in solid waste management systems: the case of Buenos Aires, Argentina
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29641-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAnalysing municipal solid waste (MSW) management scenarios is relevant for planning future policies and actions toward a circular economy. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is appropriate for evaluating technologies of MSW treatment and their environmental impacts. However, in developing countries, advanced assessments are difficult to introduce due to the lack of technical knowledge, data and financial support. This research aims to assess the main potentialities of the introduction of waste-to-energy (WtE) systems in a devel...

Current advances and emerging trends in sustainable polyhydroxyalkanoate modification from organic waste streams for material applications
This study focuses on the development of sustainable, efficient, and cutting-edge methods, such as advanced bioprocess engineering, novel catalysts, and advances in materials science. Chemical techniques, such as epoxidation, oxidation, and esterification, have been employed for PHA functionalization, while enzymatic and microbial methods have indicated promise. PHB/polylactic acid blends with cellulose fibers showed improved tensile strength by 24.45-32.08 % and decreased water vapor and oxygen transmission rates while PHB/Polycaprolactone blends with a 1:1 ratio demonstrated an elongation at break four to six times highe...

The meta-projects of the new community health centers, community hospitals and local operative centers for the Italian country
CONCLUSIONS: The study conducted aims at supporting the planning of these facilities in relation to the catchment area and their sizing. It will be necessary to define the location by evaluating the possibility of setting them up within existing hospitals, as well as to guarantee a sustainable approach in the realization of these infrastructures.PMID:37695197 | DOI:10.23750/abm.v94iS3.14241

Microplastics exposure and immunologic response
CONCLUSIONS: Unless the plastic value chain is transformed over the next two decades, the risks to species, marine ecosystems, climate, health, economy, and communities will be unmanageable. However, along with these risks are the unique opportunities to help transition to a more sustainable world.PMID:37695231 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v51i5.834

Food waste biorefinery towards circular economy in Australia
Bioresour Technol. 2023 Sep 9:129761. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2023.129761. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStaggering amounts of food waste are produced in Australia and this review provides food waste based biorefinery opportunities in moving towards a circular economy in Australia. The current food waste scenario in Australia including an overview of primary food waste sources government regulation and current management practices is presented. The major food waste streams include fruit and vegetable (waste from wine grapes apple citrus tomato and potato) nuts (almond processing waste) seafood (Fish waste) dairy whey sugar...

Predicting nurses' safety compliance behaviour in a developing economy, using the theory of planned behaviour: A configurational approach
CONCLUSION: A health and safety protocol that fails to recognize the importance of psychological antecedents on subordinates' safety compliance behaviour could limit the safety policy's usefulness in bringing the appropriate behavioural change in nurses.IMPACT: To date, no study has combined the antecedents of theory planned behaviour with perceived organizational support and cue to action to assess how they collectively predict nurses' safety compliance behaviour. Findings from the study suggest that nurses in primary health facilities inform their safety compliance behaviour by assessing self-capabilities, social signals...
