Utility of routine postoperative chest radiography in patients undergoing clavicle fixation: a retrospective chart review
CONCLUSION: Since 2009, the rate of routine postoperative chest radiography following ORIF of clavicle fractures is 36.7% at our centre. During this time period, none of the 101 patients who had postoperative chest radiographs had a postoperative iatrogenic pneumothorax. To our knowledge, this is the largest series of patients available, and our findings confirm those of several smaller studies. Owing to the low rate of postoperative iatrogenic pneumothorax, we conclude that postoperative chest radiography is unnecessary following ORIF of clavicle fractures.PMID:37673439 | PMC:PMC10495164 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.013421

Deformity correction and limb lengthening with externally controlled motorized extendable intramedullary nails: Comparison of 2 different nails
CONCLUSION: This study has demonstrated that treatment with both the FITBONE and PRECICE nails resulted in improved physical and emotional functional outcomes. Both nails had similar radiographic results, complication rates, high patient compliance, and good cosmesis.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III, Therapeutic Study.PMID:37670451 | DOI:10.5152/j.aott.2023.23026

Patient-Reported Outcomes and Computed Tomography Review After Minimally Invasive Fusion of the Sacroiliac Joint With Aggressive Joint Decortication and Joint Compression
Orthopedics. 2023 Sep 6:1-7. doi: 10.3928/01477447-20230901-04. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is a common, underrecognized source of low back pain. We evaluated outcomes in patients undergoing sacroiliac joint fusion (SIJF) using a novel, minimally invasive SIJF system emphasizing compressive forces across an aggressively debrided SIJ. We retrospectively reviewed data from a continuous set of patients presenting to a large, tertiary care hospital from September 2017 to August 2019. All patients received the novel SIJF device. Outcomes were assessed at 8 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months using the Os...

Hip Disorders in Bull Riders: Clinical Observations and Outcomes of Arthroscopy
Orthopedics. 2023 Sep 6:1-4. doi: 10.3928/01477447-20230901-03. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBull riders represent a microcosm of athletes in whom severe consequences of femoroacetabular impingement may challenge the limits of arthroscopic intervention. Observations of this cohort may provide meaningful insight into the treatment of other populations. All patients undergoing hip arthroscopy are prospectively assessed with a modified Harris Hip Score. Sixteen consecutive bull riders (21 hips) with minimum 2-year follow-up are reported. The average age was 26 years, duration of symptoms was 33 months, and follow-up was 57 m...

No Difference Between One-shot Co-injection of Corticosteroids and Hyaluronic Acid in a Three-injection Regimen for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized, Double-blind Trial
CONCLUSION: We found that a single co-injection of corticosteroids along with HA did not confer any additional benefit regarding patient-reported outcomes or physical function compared with a three-injection regimen of HA. Therefore, we do not recommend a one-shot co-injection of corticosteroids alongside the three-injection regimen of HA for patients with knee OA, and because prior research found HA to be ineffective, HA should not be used with or without corticosteroids for patients with knee OA.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level I, therapeutic study.PMID:37669538 | DOI:10.1097/CORR.0000000000002793

Early Clinical Results Following Repair of Gluteal Tendon Tears
J Surg Orthop Adv. 2023 Summer;32(2):75-82.ABSTRACTGluteal tendinopathy is a common source of impairment in adults due to degenerative changes in the gluteus medius tendon. We identified patients with gluteal tendinopathy who underwent surgery with a minimum six-month follow up. Radiographs, magnetic resonance images, demographic data, Hip Outcome Score (HOS), Veterans Rand 12-item health survey (VR-12), and a patient survey were reviewed. The cohort consisted of seventeen complete tears and thirty-one partial tears of the gluteal medius tendon (n = 48). Of patients, 72.9% reported satisfaction with surgery and noted 95.5%...

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis mimicking free intraabdominal air following chemotherapy for relapsed acute myeloblastic leukemia in a transplanted neutropenic child: a case report
CONCLUSIONS: PI is an uncommon complication, and direct radiography/computed tomography scans are very helpful in making the diagnosis in suspicious cases. PI, should be kept in mind, especially in transplanted or relapsed leukemia patients receiving intensive chemotherapy.PMID:37661686 | DOI:10.24953/turkjped.2023.116
