A correction factor is needed for the intraoperative measurement of cup inclination in total hip arthroplasty
CONCLUSION: An added correction factor of 4∘ should be respected in intraoperative inclination measurements to adapt for parallax. An increased correction factor of 6∘ in particularly low-positioned cups (< 31∘) and a decreased correction factor of 2∘ in particularly steeply positioned cups (> 43∘) is recommended.PMID:37694326 | DOI:10.3233/THC-230651

Muscle forces acting on the greater trochanter lead to a dorsal warping of the apophyseal growth plate
J Anat. 2023 Sep 11. doi: 10.1111/joa.13944. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe apophyseal growth plate of the greater trochanter, unlike most other growth plates of the human body, exhibits a curved morphology that results in a divergent pattern resembling an open crocodile mouth on plain antero-posterior radiographs. To quantify the angular alignment of the growth plate and to draw conclusions about the function of the muscles surrounding it, we analyzed 57 MRI images of 51 children and adolescents aged 3-17 years and of six adults aged 18-52 years. We measured the angulation of the plate relative to the horizontal plane ...

Anatomic repair and ligament bracing as an alternative treatment option for acute combined PCL injuries involving the posteromedial or posterolateral corner-results of a multicentre study
CONCLUSIONS: One-stage suture repair with ligament bracing is a viable technique for acute combined PCL injuries and predominantly leads to good and excellent clinical outcomes. Patients with PLC injuries show a tendency towards inferior outcomes and higher instability rates compared to PMC injuries. These results may help in therapy planning and counselling patients with these rare injury pattern.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level II.PMID:37691046 | DOI:10.1007/s00402-023-05015-5

An Unusual Cause of Fever, Neck Pain, and Neck Stiffness: Acute Calcific Tendinitis of the Longus Colli Muscle
J Emerg Med. 2023 Jun 10:S0736-4679(23)00316-5. doi: 10.1016/j.jemermed.2023.05.023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Acute calcific tendinitis (ACT) of the longus colli muscle (LCM) is an inflammatory response due to deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite crystals. It is typically correlated with whiplash and overuse injuries. A common presentation of this inflammatory response is acute but progressive neck pain. It is a rare but important cause of neck pain that should be considered on a differential diagnosis when distinguishing between life-threatening conditions and non-life-threatening causes of neck pain.CASE...

Plasma levels of 12 different cytokines correlate to PD-1 inhibitor combined chemotherapy responses in advanced non-small-cell lung cancer patient
CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that cytokines can serve as detection indicators for predicting efficacy in non-small cell lung cancer patients undergoing anti-PD-1 combined with chemotherapy treatment. Elevated levels of IL-10, TNF-α, IL-6, and IFN-γ in the plasma may indicate a higher likelihood of experiencing a worse clinical outcome.PMID:37690239 | DOI:10.1016/j.intimp.2023.110888

Characterization of patients with odontogenic necrotizing soft tissue infections in the head and neck area. A retrospective analysis
CONCLUSIONS: More than half of NSTI cases in the head and neck region had an odontogenic origin, and special attention should be paid to infections related to mandibular molars.PMID:37688516 | DOI:10.1080/00016357.2023.2254389

A retrospective study of sinonasal tumors in 182 dogs treated with stereotactic radiotherapy (3  × 10 Gy) (2010-2015)
CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Results are comparable to other reports of treatment of SRT. Acute morbidities were minimal. Modified Adams stage scheme appeared to be inappropriate for prognostication for dogs with sinonasal tumors treated with SRT.PMID:37688322 | DOI:10.1111/jvim.16838
