Narrative Retell Assessment Using "Frog" Stories: A Practice-Based Research Speech-Language Pathology Partnership Exploring Story Equivalency
CONCLUSION: Through a practice-based research partnership, researchers and clinicians worked collaboratively to evaluate a tool, adapt its use, and improve evidence-based practice in a manner that was appropriate and met the needs for the clinical context.PMID:37656063 | DOI:10.1044/2023_LSHSS-22-00124

Effects of Auditory Training in Older Adults
CONCLUSION: Overall, the study has extended the auditory benefit from the LACE training to the typical aging population in terms of improved communication ability, but the effect of training on auditory abilities did not transfer to gains in cognitive abilities.PMID:37656601 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00621

Exploring Assumptions of the Bilingual Delay in Children With and Without Developmental Language Disorder
CONCLUSIONS: These results inform researchers and clinicians about the nature of bilingual proficiency in children with and without DLD. Mixed dominance was observed in both groups but with different patterns at lower levels of English exposure in children with and without DLD. We also see that when children's best score is considered, all differences in performance along the bilingual continuum are related to ability not language exposure. This has implications for how to consider children's language test scores in making clinical decisions about bilingual children. Presentation Video: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.239294...

A Comparison of Sound Production Treatment and Metrical Pacing Therapy for Apraxia of Speech: A Single-Case Experimental Design
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that individuals in the chronic stages of AOS can benefit from both SPT and MPT, corroborating prior research on articulatory kinematic and rate and/or rhythm control treatment approaches. It contributes a comparison of two protocols for AOS with respect to whole word targets, intelligibility, and individual self-report of communicative participation changes. More participants showed a relative advantage of SPT over MPT. One individual reported communicative participation improvement after MPT.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.23971929.PMID:37656150 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-22-00302

The Influence of Sensorineural Hearing Loss on the Relationship Between the Perception of Speech in Noise and Dysarthric Speech
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated a high level of consistency in intelligibility performance for listeners across two different types of degraded speech, even when those listeners were further challenged by the presence of sensorineural hearing loss. Clinical implications for both listeners with hearing loss and their communication partners with dysarthria are discussed.PMID:37652059 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00115

A Narrative Approach to Synthesizing Research on Vietnamese Bilingual and Monolingual Children
CONCLUSIONS: This research overview aims to offer clinicians and researchers the sociocultural context for understanding the relevance of this body of research. It also serves as an invitation for new generations of scholars, particularly scholars of color, to see their own unique positionings and perspectives as valuable and necessary for scientific innovation and progress. A right convergence area of the prefrontal lobe is involved in the improvement of semantic fluency in patients with post-stroke aphasia
CONCLUSION: The improvement of semantic fluency in subacute PSA patients may require the participation of the right convergence area of the prefrontal lobe.PMID:37651207 | DOI:10.1080/10749357.2023.2253632

Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation Modulates Performance but Not Pupil Size During Nonnative Speech Category Learning
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that pupillary responses may not be a reliable marker of locus coeruleus-norepinephrine system activity in humans. However, future research should systematically examine the effects of stimulation amplitude on both behavior and pupillary responses.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24036666.PMID:37652065 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00596

Influence of Perspective Distortion in Laryngoscopy
CONCLUSIONS: The recording angle in 2D laryngoscopy should be carefully considered during visual inspection of the VF dynamics. Most of the investigated objective parameters were unaffected by the examined perspective distortion. However, especially left-right symmetry measures should only be used under controlled boundary conditions to avoid misdiagnosis and misinterpretation.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.23961183.PMID:37652062 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00027
