e-Babylab: An open-source browser-based tool for unmoderated online developmental studies
Behav Res Methods. 2023 Aug 24. doi: 10.3758/s13428-023-02200-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic massively changed the context and feasibility of developmental research. This new reality, as well as considerations about sample diversity and naturalistic settings for developmental research, highlights the need for solutions for online studies. In this article, we present e-Babylab, an open-source browser-based tool for unmoderated online studies targeted for young children and babies. e-Babylab offers an intuitive graphical user interface for study creation and management of studies, users, participant d...

Prosodic Focus Interpretation in Spectrotemporally Degraded Speech by Non-Native Listeners
CONCLUSION: Non-native listeners are not more strongly affected by spectrotemporal degradations than native listeners, and less proficient non-native listeners are not more strongly affected by these degradations than more proficient non-native listeners.PMID:37616276 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00568

Perceptual Learning of Dysarthria in Adolescence
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides the first tranche of evidence that adolescent dysarthric speech is learnable-a finding that holds even for adolescent listeners whose speech perception systems are not yet fully developed. Given the formative role that social interactions play during adolescence, these findings of improved intelligibility afford important clinical implications.PMID:37616225 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00231

Noun and Verb Lexicons Differentially Predict Later Grammatical Development in Mandarin-Speaking Children With and Without Late Language Emergence
CONCLUSIONS: Noun and verb lexicon size differentially predicted later grammatical outcomes in young Mandarin-speaking children with and without LLE. The finding suggested that children with LLE may have approached grammatical learning differently from their typical peers due to the small verb lexicon size in the early phase of language development.PMID:37616222 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00528

A Randomized Controlled Trial of Treatment Distribution and Biofeedback Effects on Speech Production in School-Age Children With Apraxia of Speech
CONCLUSIONS: When the number of treatment hours is fixed, an intensive schedule of Speech Motor Chaining facilitated greater improvement than a distributed schedule. Ultrasound biofeedback initially accelerated learning, but the benefits may dissipate as treatment continues or after it ends.PMID:37611182 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00622

Longitudinal Grammaticality Judgments of Tense Marking in Complex Questions in Children With and Without Specific Language Impairment, Ages 5-18 Years
CONCLUSION: The outcomes support the task as having potential screening value for identification of children with SLI and are consistent with linguistic interpretations of task demands.PMID:37607389 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00507

A Vowel-Centric View Toward Characterizing Temporal Organization of Motor Speech Activities in Neurologically Impaired and Healthy Speakers
CONCLUSIONS: The findings provide preliminary support for vowel-centric temporal organization of motor speech activities. Such temporal organization holds some extent of both stability and flexibility, which may facilitate the parsing of syllabic events during auditory processing, while accommodating task-specific suprasegmental variations. The timing impairments in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are likely attributed to the disease-imposed dynamic constraints, reducing the entrainment of the related motor speech activities to the underlying linguistic elements. These findings have potential implications in guiding the asse...

Comprehensive Assessments of Theory of Mind Abilities for School-Age Children: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: Comprehensive assessments enable examiners to develop a profile of children's theory of mind strengths and needs. Strengths of the identified assessments include sufficient convergent validity and internal consistency. Further research is required to develop higher quality evidence for the content validity, structural validity, and reliability of the included assessments.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.23817495.PMID:37606590 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-22-00316

The Impact of Ankyloglossia Beyond Breastfeeding: A Scoping Review of Potential Symptoms
CONCLUSIONS: Twenty-six of 1,568 screened studies (> 1,228 patients) were included. Six studies were high quality and 20 were medium quality. Studies identified various symptoms that may be partially attributable to ankyloglossia after infancy, including speech/articulation difficulties, eating difficulties, dysphagia, sleep-disordered breathing symptoms, dental malocclusion, and social embarrassment such as oral hygiene issues. Multiple comparative studies found associations between ankyloglossia and risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea; a randomized controlled trial found that frenotomy may attenuate apnea severit...
