Through Difficult Times – Light, Debbie ’ s story
To set the scene, I should explain two things – one, although I am only 52, my husband, in his sixties, lives with Alzheimer’s disease and, for myself, I have had some periods in life with quite serious mental illness, most notably a post puerperal psychosis following the birth of our son, now 16. These two things together meant that the time of my operation was never going to be easy. After suffering from heavy bleeding for a number of years, I discovered in summer 2017 that I had fibroids by having a scan. Since they are thought to ‘shrink during the menopause’ I decided to cope with the bleeding using a “b...

Meet the Birmingham homecare workers fighting for their jobs
“We’re not standing for it because we’ve got children.” Birmingham council’s homecare workers are not taking proposed changes to their contracts lying down, but who are they and why exactly are they fighting so hard? Earlier this year, Birmingham council announced plans to slash the hours of homecare staff working for its enablement service. The changes would mean some staff have their working hours cut from 37 hours to just 14 – so a worker who currently earns around £18,000 a year could lose up to £11,000. The council also want to enforce a new shift pattern which the staff say will be unmanageable....

Prentis tells Birmingham care strikers ‘we will win’
“We will win – we cannot afford for Birmingham council to win.” That was the pledge this afternoon from general secretary Dave Prentis, as he welcomed striking Birmingham carers to UNISON Centre in London. The strikers were taking their 17th day of action, as the city’s Labour council tries to cut their hours in a desperate attempt to save money. Under the plans, which the council claims will increase ‘efficiency,’ carers would lose money. Depending on the hours allocated to an individual, that could mount up to £6,000 a year for a worker who currently earns around £12,000 a year. Mr Prentis (pictured above w...

I await a second Magnum opus | Brief letters
Morris Traveller in the Alps | What ’s the point of Sats? | DNA ancestry tests | A dog called Trevor | Lolly sticksIn the early 60s, I drove a Morris Traveller (Letters, passim) laden with three friends and a month ’s worth of camping gear to Yugoslavia. We stalled on a 1:2.5 gradient up the Julian Alps from Villach in Austria to the border. We set about unloading all my passengers and possibly the luggage with a view to them humping everything to the pass. Fortunately, an Austrian army jeep came swooping do wn, swung round and threw out a tow rope, and dragged us up to the top. Angels! We then rolled down cheerfully i...
