Harsh Northeast Winter No Hindrance To Hungry Ticks
http://media.boston.cbslocal.com/CBSBOS_1604201522190500000AA.mp4 ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Think you’re safe from ticks because the harsh winter froze them or because you haven’t been trekking through the woods? Think again. Researchers focused on ticks and the debilitating diseases they spread say the heavy snow that blanketed the Northeast this winter was like a cozy quilt for baby blacklegged ticks that are now questing for blood as the weather warms up. And a researcher at New York’s Binghamton University said Lyme disease-infected ticks aren’t just in forests and fields. “We’...

This Time-Lapse Film Proves There's No Better Place To See The Stars Than Out West
Randy Halverson, the South Dakota filmmaker behind DakotaLapse, is back with a new time-lapse video that is nothing short of spectacular. "Trails End" combines some of Halverson's favorite time-lapse shots he took in 2014 along with auroras he captured in early 2015. He recorded the film in Wyoming, Utah and South Dakota. Many of the clips were captured while camping, he wrote, "near the end of some remote trail." The night time-lapses of the stars, Milky Way and auroras are captured with long exposures on digital SLR still cameras, Halverson explained on his website. "The long exposures of 10 to 30 seconds allow the c...

The Enduring Importance of the Last Man on the Moon
Real astronauts never say goodbye. At least, not the way you’d think they would before they take off on a mission that could very well kill them. They’re good at the quick wave, the hat tip, the catch-you-on-the-flip-side wink. But the real goodbye—the if I don’t come home here are all the things I always wanted to say to you sort of thing? Not a chance. But Gene Cernan, commander of Apollo 17, tried to split the difference—as a scene in the new documentary The Last Man on the Moon sweetly captures. Before Cernan headed off for his first trip to the moon, the Apollo 10 orbital mission, which w...

Hoping to Meet E.T.? Be Careful What You Wish
Let’s be honest: if we ever encounter an extraterrestrial, we’ll probably lose our marbles—and not in a good way. We’ve been contemplating the meeting for a long time, and the stories we’ve told ourselves have not been encouraging. There is H.G. Wells’s War of the Worlds, in which invading Martians lay waste to much of the Earth until they are defeated by a terrestrial virus. There is Independence Day, the 1996 movie in which invading aliens—who clearly haven’t been paying attention—lay waste to much of Earth until they are defeated by a computer virus. There is the cel...

How Do You Treat Water for Cryptosporidium?
Discussion Cryptosporidium is an oocyte-forming coccidian protozoan.
