My total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo oophorectomy – Joon ’ s story
At the end of July 2015 I had a total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo oophorectomy. I was forty eight years old and this is my story. I was in my mid to late twenties, a mum, wife and total rock concert fan, life was great. Then my periods became “different” at one stage actually stopped for around nine to ten months. My GP told me I had no eggs! However, two years on we got our longed for special delivery, a son. After his birth my periods were normal just a bit heavier. The years flew by and I found myself aged thirty eight, how the heck did that happen? My periods again became “different&...

Excuse Me While I Lather My Child in This Toxic Death Cream
It's Memorial Day weekend. We are up at the cabin with family. A time where we are supposed to be resting and relaxing. A time of thankfulness. A time of remembering those who have given their lives for our freedom. My husband has been working overtime and doing freelance work so we've been looking forward to this trip for weeks. We even bought our twin 2-year-olds their first fishing poles and planned a treasure hunt. And then there's me. A massive ball of, "just take me to the sanitarium." I mean, one of my boys just looked at me and said, "Mama's tired." Yes. Yes, Bennett. Mama is tired. Mama is reeeaaal tired. I...

Epic Birth Photo Captures The Exact Moment Mom Got Surprising News
An Australian birth photographer recently captured a priceless moment in the delivery room. On May 20, Jessica Jackson of Itty Bitty Photography was on hand to photograph Koto Nakamura as she gave birth to her first child. Nakamura and her husband Sina Niakansafy had been told at previous ultrasounds that they were having a girl, so needless to say, they were a bit surprised in the delivery room when they learned their new baby was a boy. Jackson captured the mom's look of shock upon hearing the doctor declare she had a son. "This photo was taken the moment Koto looked at me for clarification that her daughter was ac...

The Dangers of Summer Driving
On Memorial Day in 1986, on a rural Midwestern highway, a blue two-door Ford Escort crashed head-on into a four-door Cadillac passing it. The driver of a tractor-trailer traveling behind the Escort slammed on his breaks, but to little effect. The huge rig plowed into the back of the Escort as the car collapsed like a crushed aluminum can. The driver of the Escort died on the scene from massive head and neck trauma. Surviving drivers both reported that the Escort had drifted into the opposite lane of traffic and had not swerved before impact. The driver of that blue Escort was my mother. I was 14 when she died. The exact ...

Mindfulness and OCD
Vincent was a young man experiencing intrusive thoughts. All he wanted in life was to get rid of those tormenting images and thoughts once and for all. One day, after coming back from a camping trip he told his therapist, “I was so busy and focused on what I was doing that I didn’t have time to analyze my thoughts and obsess. I was mainly focused in the present moment. If only I could go on camping adventures every day!” Vincent’s OCD symptoms had begun when he was 12 years old. He had created thinking patterns that weren’t helpful. In the past, he had tried different “distracting strategies” but their effect...

What Science Says About the Bathroom Debate
Want to see a living experiment in what happens when traditional gender lines are truly blurred? Forget North Carolina or Mississippi or any of the places in the U.S. where politicians have made the question of which person uses which bathroom an unlikely cultural flash point. Take a look instead at Samoa—the tiny island nation that can teach the world’s most powerful democracy a thing or two about the basic business of human sexuality. Samoa, like the U.S. and every other country in the world, is home to plenty of men and plenty of women, but, unlike any other country in the world, it’s also home to the ...

Tent camping could lead to flame retardant exposure
For campers, nothing beats sleeping in a tent in the great outdoors. But scientists are finding out the air inside tents might not be as fresh as people think. A study has found that flame retardants used in the manufacturing of tents are released in the air within this enclosed space, which could lead to campers breathing them in.

7 Kids Share Their Hilariously Adorable Dream Outdoor Family Adventures
Just in time for warm weather and school vacation, we partnered with eBay to ask kids from around the country what they would do and where they would go if they could choose any outdoor adventure with their family. Their answers were cute, and simple: for these kiddos, adventures don't have to be lavish -- time spent outside with family is exciting simply because they're spending it with the people they love most (though a little scuba diving never hurts, but only if there are no dragons!). Check out their answers, and add your own favorite family outdoor moment in the comments! 1. Clocked Out Image: Sola Deo Gloria via Ge...
