Matt’s story: No obstacles
When Matt Freitas walked into TA Fitness, a warrior gym in Weymouth, Massachusetts, with his mother and a doctor’s note, co-owner Dave Cavanagh wasn’t sure what to expect. Then he thought, “If he’s coming into the gym with one leg, he must know what he can and can’t do.” It’s seems as if the 15-year-old ninja warrior competitor and lacrosse goalie can do just about anything. He’s a straight-A student, Boy Scout, wrestler and local celebrity. “Everyone knows Matt,” says Jenny Lawler, co-owner of TA Fitness. “I’ve seen younger kids whisper to their parents, ‘Is that Matt Freitas?’” Last year, Ma...

Cheesed: The Toxic Story Behind Food Packaging
When I was a kid, processed cheese was a family camping staple. It tasted great, melted beautifully and, most importantly, didn't spoil easily. We didn't think of it as "processed cheese food," or wonder what exactly it was made out of. And we certainly didn't suspect that the plastic it was wrapped in might be leaching hormone-disrupting chemicals into our campfire dinners. Little did we know that research now points to chemicals in food packaging as yet another hidden threat to our health from America's industrial food system. It's challenging enough to avoid the pesticides, artificial food colorings and added sugars t...

Smell Dating: Love In the Stenches
Researchers believe that our unique bodily scent plays a larger role in our social lives than we know. Now, social media entrepreneurs are putting that science to the test. Can you sniff your way to love? Everyone knows that to find true love, you have to be yourself. I’d never heard that you should also smell like yourself, though, until I joined a matchmaking service called Smell Dating. For three days and nights I wore the same cotton T-shirt, through sweaty workouts and while I slept. Showers were allowed. Deodorant was not. After 72 hours, the cotton was pickled in my essence. I passed off the damp, stained tee ...

Don't Let A Crisis Go To Waste
We stood on the tanbark, holding up a hand to block the sun as we looked up. Will stared down at us from the top of the playground structure. And by top, I mean the roof that was not meant to be climbed on. Was he really going to jump? Shit. I hoped not. If Will jumped, we'd all have to do the same. Such was the sole purpose of our 3rd grade "Daredevils" club. As he always did, Will jumped. Then we all jumped. Will couldn't help being cool. If he fell during graduation, it'd be endearing. If he beat you in foursquare, you'd secretly feel honored. If he took up trumpet, your guitar would instantly feel lame. So when he ...
