California Beachgoers Describe Finding Crash Survivor
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A self-described beachcomber says it was her luckiest find yet: A woman who survived a 250-foot car plunge off a cliff and a week stranded on a remote California beach. "We freakin' love that beach and we're so glad she's alive," Chelsea Moore said Monday as she described the afternoon last Friday when she and her husband found 23-year-old Angela Hernandez of Portland. Hernandez had been driving to her sister's home in Lancaster, near Los Angeles, on July 6 when a small animal crossed in front of her, causing her to swerve and lose control of her car, she wrote from her hospital bed Sunday in...

An interview with Vic Cavalli, author of The Road to Vermilion Lake
this week I’d like to introduce Vic Cavalli, author of the road to vermilion lake. He has been teaching Creative Writing at the university level since 2001, and is captivated by the complex interpenetrating relationships between literature and the visual arts.  What is one thing that no one would usually know about you? I love fishing for steelhead in the winter. The colder the weather the better—snow, wind, ice forming on the edges of the river.  Those harsh elements keep all but the true devotees from the rivers and the resulting experience is a wild flame-like solitude. The ultimate contrast with my office d...

Powerful Storm Hits Europe, 4 Dead Amid Traffic Chaos
THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — A powerful storm pummeled Europe with high winds and snow Thursday, killing at least four people in three countries, grounding flights, halting trains, ripping roofs off buildings and flipping over trucks. Falling trees killed two 62-year-old men in the Netherlands, a woman south of the Belgian capital of Brussels and a 59-year-old man at a camping site in the German town of Emmerich, near the Dutch border. Police spokeswoman Jose Albers told Dutch national broadcaster NOS that authorities also were investigating whether the powerful gusts were to blame for the death of a 66-year-old man who...

Isaac ’s story: A ‘new normal’ with short bowel syndrome
It was the morning after their baby son Isaac had come home from the hospital, and Jennifer and Brian Campbell were performing the same sweet act of bonding as many new parents: giving him a bath in the sink. But as they maneuvered around the room, they suddenly realized something was very wrong. “I fell to the floor and started screaming and crying as formula shot out of his stomach,” remembers Jennifer. “I thought we’d broken him.” The reality, of course, was that the Campbells were simply adjusting to their new “normal” — something any parent of a medically complex child can understand. Isaac wasn’t a ...

Montana Creates Special Court to Handle Asbestos Cases
The Montana Supreme Court on Nov. 28 ordered the creation of an Asbestos Claims Court to oversee hundreds of pending asbestos-related personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits. At least 540 asbestos cases are tied up in Montana courts, most filed on behalf of people who became sick or died following exposure to asbestos from the now-defunct W.R. Grace vermiculite mine in Libby. Justices ruled there was sufficient need to create a special court to resolve the claims, many of which date to the early 2000s. District Judge Amy Eddy will oversee pretrial proceedings. A schedule has not been set. “It’s an enormous responsi...
