Association of Migraine Disorders Research Grant
The purpose of this RFP is to support novel and transformative evidence-based research into migraine-related disorders. A preference will be given to basic science projects. Specifically the purpose of this RFP is: 1. To understand the pathophysiology of the neural malfunction that is called migraine disease 2. To prove or disprove a common pathophysiology among the multiple symptoms and syndromes that claim a relationship to migraine 3. To improve our understanding of the natural history of migraine disease at various stages of life, such as the differences between episodic and persistent migraine symptoms 4...

Migraine and risk of stroke in older adults: Northern Manhattan Study
Conclusion: In our racially/ethnically diverse population-based cohort, migraine was associated with an increased risk of stroke among active smokers but not among nonsmokers.

Migraine prevalence, socioeconomic status, and social causation
Conclusions: The higher incidence of migraine in lower HH income groups is compatible with the social causation hypothesis. Once initiated, migraine remission is independent of HH income. Onset and remission may have etiologically distinct causes.

Reduction in perceived stress as a migraine trigger: Testing the "let-down headache" hypothesis
Conclusions: Reduction in stress from one day to the next is associated with migraine onset the next day. Decline in stress may be a marker for an impending migraine attack and may create opportunities for preemptive pharmacologic or behavioral interventions.

Migraine trait symptoms in migraine with and without aura
Conclusions: The observed SNS seem to belong to a physiologic spectrum of multisensory phenomena. Some of these phenomena were significantly accentuated in patients with migraine and may therefore be termed migraine trait symptoms. However, these results will have to be confirmed in a prospective study with face-to-face interviews.

Recalled maltreatment, migraine, and tension-type headache: Results of the AMPP Study
Conclusions: ACEs are associated with a higher risk of migraine vs ETTH. Attenuation of the influence of ACEs by depression and anxiety suggests confounding or mediation, although results for emotional abuse were generally maintained.

Reduced efficacy of sumatriptan in migraine with aura vs without aura
Conclusion: This post hoc analysis of pooled data from multiple randomized trials indicates that sumatriptan is less effective as acute therapy for migraine attacks with aura compared with attacks without aura. In the single study of inhaled DHE, the treatment had similar efficacy for migraine attacks with and without aura. Different responses of migraine with vs without aura to acute therapies may provide insight into underlying migraine mechanisms and influence the choice of acute therapies for different types of migraine attacks.

Systemic right-to-left shunts, ischemic brain lesions, and persistent migraine activity
Conclusions: RLS are more prevalent in migraineurs with aura but do not explain the increased prevalence of silent posterior circulation infarcts or white matter lesions in migraineurs. Spontaneous RLS are associated with persistent migraine.

Ischemic stroke subtypes and migraine with visual aura in the ARIC study
Conclusion: In participants with migraine with visual aura in late middle age, increased risk of cardioembolic stroke was observed. Migraine with visual aura was linked to increased stroke risk, while migraine without visual aura was not, over the period of 20 years. These results are specific to older migraineurs.

Vestibular Migraine: How to Sort it Out and What to Do About it
Conclusions: The keys to correctly diagnosing VM is identifying a relationship between vestibular symptoms and migrainous features and being aware of the heterogeneity of manifestations of this enigmatic, but treatable, condition. The principles of treatment of VM include rescue therapy, lifestyle modification, nonpharmacologic migraine preventives, pharmacologic migraine prophylaxis, and treatment of comorbidities.
