Sexually transmitted hepatitis C infection: the evolving epidemic in HIV-positive and HIV-negative MSM
Purpose of review The scale-up of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy and introduction of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has changed the epidemiology of sexually acquired hepatitis C virus (HCV) amongst HIV-positive and HIV-negative MSM. Recent findings Sexually acquired HCV continues to occur predominantly amongst HIV-positive MSM. Despite an increased uptake of DAA therapy the incidence of acute HCV has not declined consistently amongst HIV-positive MSM, likely a result of high infection and reinfection rates. Increasing cases of sexually acquired HCV have been reported amongst HIV-negative MSM accessing PrEP. Des...

Acceptability, perceived reliability and challenges associated with distributing HIV self-test kits to young MSM in Uganda: a  qualitative study.
CONCLUSIONS: Distribution of HIVST kits by MSM peers is an acceptable strategy that can promote access to testing. HIVST was perceived by participants as beneficial because it would address many barriers that affect their acceptance of testing. However, a combined approach that includes follow-up, linkage to HIV care and prevention services are needed for effective results. PMID: 30932364 [PubMed - in process]

Cost-effectiveness of increased HIV testing among MSM in The Netherlands
Conclusion: Increased HIV testing can prevent considerable numbers of new HIV infections among MSM, but may be cost-effective only if targeted at high-risk individuals, such as those with many partners.

Characteristics of Sex Events, Partners, and Motivations and Their Associations with HIV-Risk Behavior in a Daily Diary Study of High-Risk Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM)
This study explored detailed descriptive characteristics of sex events, partner characteristics, and motivations for sex and condom use, and examined whether specific aspects of these characteristics were associated with having condomless anal sex (CAS) with high-risk partners. High-risk CAS was common among MSM, with the majority of participants having met their partners online and many reporting sex the same day they met. Results showed that the odds of CAS were not higher with partners met online versus those met in other ways, but MSM were more likely to have asked online partners about their HIV status and testing his...

IJERPH, Vol. 17, Pages 871: Development of a Black Caucus within the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN): Representing the Perspectives of Black Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM)
HPTN Black Caucus Black men who have sex with men (MSM) have disproportionate HIV disease burden in the United States. Black MSM have been underrepresented in biomedical research, including HIV clinical trials, due to a myriad of socio-structural, socio-cultural, and psychosocial factors. The HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) 061, a feasibility study of a multi-component HIV prevention intervention for Black MSM in six US cities, incorporated the development and implementation of a Black Caucus as a culturally grounded model for the integration of Black MSM in clinical trials and research in HPTN. Based on a qualita...

Estimating the size of HIV-negative MSM population that would benefit from pre-exposure prophylaxis in Florida.
CONCLUSION: Areas with high numbers of MSM with PrEP indications could be targeted with information to reduce HIV acquisition. PMID: 32145998 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Disparities in the PrEP continuum for trans women compared to MSM in San Francisco, California: results from population-based cross-sectional behavioural surveillance studies.
CONCLUSIONS: We found PrEP disparities for trans women compared to MSM and the need for differentiated implementation strategies to meet the specific PrEP barriers trans women face. Inclusion of trans women's HIV risks is needed in CDC guidance for PrEP. Interventions to increase trans women's awareness of PrEP including at the provider and community level are also needed. Finally, programming that addresses trans women's barriers to housing and income is also needed to reduce PrEP disparities. PMID: 32602642 [PubMed - in process]

Application of the "syndemics" theory to explain unprotected sex and transactional sex: A crosssectional study in men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender women, and non-MSM in Colombia.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights the need for bundled mental health programs addressing childhood sexual abuse, illicit drug use, and frequent alcohol use with other HIV prevention programs. PMID: 32673465 [PubMed - in process]

Gut Microbiome Changes Associated With HIV Infection and Sexual Orientation
Conclusions: This study shows that the changes in the gut microbiome are related to HIV and MSM status. Importantly, MSM status may have a far greater impact on the gut microbiome than HIV status.

The mediated effect of HIV risk perception in the relationship between peer education and HIV testing uptake among three key populations in China
CONCLUSIONS: Participants who received peer education tended to perceive their risk of HIV infection, which in turn was associated with increased HIV testing uptake among MSM and DUs. Therefore, in addition to peer education interventions, more report about HIV epidemic and risk assessment should also be scaled up to enhance HIV risk perception among key populations.PMID:33766062 | DOI:10.1186/s12981-021-00334-2

Changing Patterns of Sexual Behavior and HIV/STI Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in Seattle, 2002 to 2018
Conclusions: Since 2013, CAS with HIV-discordant/unknown-status partners increased substantially concurrent with declining HIV test positivity and increasing STI test positivity. This highlights the success of biomedical HIV prevention strategies to reduce HIV incidence while affirming the need for new approaches to STI prevention.

Role of geospatial mapping in the planning of HIV programs: A case study from Southern India
We present characteristics of an HIV epidemic within Hyderabad, a large city in southern India, as a case study to highlight the utility of such data in program planning. Cross-sectional sample recruited using respondent-driven sampling in a cluster-randomized trial. We analyzed data from 2 cross-sectional respondent-driven sampling surveys of MSM in Hyderabad, which were conducted as part of a cluster-randomized trial. All participants were tested for HIV and those positive underwent viral load quantification. ArcGIS was used to create heat maps of MSM distribution using self-reported postal code of residence and co...

Anal human papillomavirus infection and its relationship with abnormal anal cytology among MSM with or without HIV infection in Japan
This study investigated anal HPV infections and cytological abnormalities among MSM with or without HIV infection. Anal swabs were obtained, and cytological results were examined. Hybrid capture-based methodology was used for hr-HPV genotyping. The exclusion criterion was a history of vaccination against HPV. 644 subjects participated, and the overall prevalence of hr-HPV was 59.7% (95% CI 54.7-62.3), HIV-infected had higher prevalence than HIV-uninfected (68.9% vs 40.6%) p < .001. Among hr-HPV-infected participants, 82.8% (312/377) were infected with at least one of 9 valent vaccine-covered hr-HPV genotypes. From regre...

Risk of HIV Diagnosis Following Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infections in Tennessee, 2013–2017
Conclusions While public health efforts often focus on MSM, non-MSM with STIs is also a subgroup at high risk of incident HIV diagnosis. Non-MSM and MSM with any STI, particularly syphilis, should be prioritized for HIV testing and prevention interventions.
