Adverse childhood experiences: a meta-analysis of prevalence and moderators among half a million adults in 206 studies
World Psychiatry. 2023 Oct;22(3):463-471. doi: 10.1002/wps.21122.ABSTRACTExposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including maltreatment and family dysfunction, is a major contributor to the global burden of disease and disability. With a large body of international literature on ACEs having emerged over the past 25 years, it is timely to now synthetize the available evidence to estimate the global prevalence of ACEs and, through a series of moderator analyses, determine which populations are at higher risk. We searched studies published between January 1, 1998 and August 5, 2021 in Medline, PsycINFO and Embase. S...

Assuring the Groundwork for Success: Mentorship, Sponsorship, and Allyship for Practicing Anesthesiologists
Anesth Analg. 2023 Oct 1;137(4):754-762. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006646. Epub 2023 Sep 5.ABSTRACTThe challenges facing the health care industry in the post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic world are numerous, jeopardizing wellness, and performance. Maintaining engagement and fulfillment of anesthesiologists in their work is now a critical issue in various practice settings: academic, private practice, and corporate medicine. In this article, we offer insights on how mentorship, sponsorship, and allyship are important in the advancement of the anesthesiology workforce including women and underrepresented mino...

A rehabilitative approach beyond the acute stroke event: a scoping review about functional recovery perspectives in the chronic hemiplegic patient
ConclusionThe literature analyzed invites us to reflect respect to neurorehabilitation approach to the patient with chronic stroke sequelae often considered to have as its objective the maintenance of the present motor function and contain disability: instead, the review reports how, even in chronicity, the patient always reports margins of statistically and clinically significant improvement. The chronic stroke rehabilitation over 6 months has been proved effective in obtaining recovery in different settings.

Treatment of digital ulcers in systemic sclerosis: recent developments and future perspectives
AbstractDigital ulcers (DUs) comprise the main manifestation of vasculopathy and are a major cause of disability in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). A literature search in Web of Science, PubMed and Directory of Open Access Journals was performed in December 2022 to identify articles published in the last decade regarding the management of DUs. Prostacyclin analogues, endothelin antagonists and phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors have shown promising results both as a stand-alone treatment and in combination for the treatment of existing and prevention of new DUs. Moreover, autologous fat grafting and botulinum toxin inj...

Cross-cultural adaptation and concurrent validity of the children's OMNI scale of perceived exertion for Arm-Crank activity in Spina Bifida
CONCLUSIONS: The OMNI scale was cross-culturally adapted to Brazilian-Portuguese. The Brazilian OMNI-Wheel was validated based on strong associations of RPE with HR and VO2. Implications For RehabilitationThe original English OMNI was cross-culturally adapted to Brazilian-Portuguese.A Brazilian wheelchair OMNI was concurrently validated for Arm-Crank Activity in adolescents with spina bifida. This OMNI scale version may aid health providers in monitoring perceived exertion in Brazil.PMID:37706498 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2023.2252342

Stepped collaborative care for pain and posttraumatic stress disorder after major trauma: a randomized controlled feasibility trial
CONCLUSIONS: Stepped collaborative care was low-cost, feasible, and acceptable to people at risk of PTSD or pain after major trauma.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONAfter hospitalization for injury, people can experience difficulty accessing timely support to manage posttraumatic stress, pain and other concerns.Stepped case management-based interventions that provide individualized support and collaborative care have reduced posttraumatic stress symptom severity for patients admitted to American trauma centers. We showed that this model of care could be adapted to target pain and mental health in the trauma system in Victoria...

Beyond TORCH: A Narrative Review of the Impact of Antenatal and Perinatal Infections on the Risk of Disability
Neurosci Biobehav Rev. 2023 Sep 12:105390. doi: 10.1016/j.neubiorev.2023.105390. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInfections and inflammation during pregnancy or early life can alter child neurodevelopment and increase the risk for structural brain abnormalities and mental health disorders. There is strong evidence that TORCH infections (i.e., Treponema pallidum, Toxoplasma gondii, rubella virus, cytomegalovirus, herpes virus) alter fetal neurodevelopment across multiple developmental domains and contribute to motor and cognitive disabilities. However, the impact of a broader range of viral and bacterial infections on fetal d...

Effects of low-intensity exercise on spontaneously developed knee osteoarthritis in male senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8
CONCLUSION: This study revealed that SAMP8 developed spontaneous knee OA with age, which resembled the disease symptoms in humans. Low-intensity exercise temporarily alleviated degeneration of the remaining cartilage, synovitis, and age-related decreases in knee flexion angle, stride length, and muscle atrophy in SAMP8. However, exercise during OA progression with age may cause mechanical stress that could be both beneficial and detrimental to joint health.PMID:37710278 | DOI:10.1186/s13075-023-03162-z

Patient-Reported Outcome Measures for Hearing Aid Benefit and Satisfaction: Content Validity and Readability
CONCLUSIONS: The categories covered by hearing aid PROMs vary considerably, with no single instrument comprehensively covering all the key ICF components. Future development of hearing aid outcome measures should consider a mixed methodology approach for improved content validity and ensure an appropriate reading level.PMID:37708535 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-22-00535

Prenatal Diagnosis and Molecular Cytogenetic Analyses of a de novo Deletion on Chromosome 4p16.3p15.33
Altern Ther Health Med. 2023 Sep 15:AT8915. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) (OMIM 194190) is a contiguous gene syndrome with an estimated prevalence of around 1 in 50,000 births. The syndrome is caused by the deletion of a critical region (Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome Critical region-WHSCR) on chromosome 4p16.3. Its core features are typical facial gestalt, growth retardation, intellectual disability, developmental delay, and seizures. Prenatal diagnosis of WHS helps clinicians and parents make informed decisions about pregnancy management. In this research, a 31-year-old woman (gravida 1, para 0) ...

Aphantasia within the framework of neurodivergence: Some preliminary data and the curse of the confidence gap
Conscious Cogn. 2023 Sep 12;115:103567. doi: 10.1016/j.concog.2023.103567. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAphantasia is a neurocognitive phenomenon affecting voluntary visual imagery, such that it is either entirely absent, or markedly impaired. Using both the social and medical models of disability, this article discusses the extent to which aphantasia can be understood as a disorder or just a form of neutral neurodivergence, given that imagery plays a central role in thinking and memory for most other people. Preliminary school performance data are presented, showing that low imagery does not necessarily complicate life, ...
