Adsorption properties and mechanisms of methylene blue and tetracycline by nano-silica biochar composites activated by KOH
In this study, a novel nano-silica-biochar composite (NSBC) was synthesized based on corn straw as raw material, by a combination of ball milling, pyrolysis and KOH activation. The modified biochar with rough surface had higher specific surface area (117.67-132.82 m2/g), developed pore structure (0.12-0.15 cm3/g) and abundant surface functional groups (-OH, -COOH, Si-O and aromatic CC were dominated). These provided abundant active sites for the adsorption of pollutants. The adsorption capacities of NSBC for Methylene Blue (MB) and Tetracycline (TC) were both higher than that of other similar products, the maximum adsorpti...

The presence of copper ions alters tetracycline removal pathway in aerobic granular sludge: Performance and mechanism
This study investigated the removal characteristics of tetracycline (TC) in the presence of copper ions (Cu2+) in aerobic granular sludge by analyzing the TC removal pathway, composition and functional group changes of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and microbial community structure. The TC removal pathway changed from cell biosorption to EPS biosorption, and the microbial degradation rate of TC was reduced by 21.37% in the presence of Cu2+. Cu2+ and TC induced enrichment of denitrifying bacteria and EPS-producing bacteria by regulating the expression of signaling molecules and amino acid synthesis genes to incr...

Illustration on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of typical multi-antibiotic resistant bacteria in aquatic environments through complete genomes and comparative genomics
In this study, a multi-resistant superbug (TR3) was screened by the selective pressure of multi-antibiotics from the activated sludge of the aeration tanks of urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in 5 different regions of China. Based on the 16 S rDNA sequence alignment it was found that the sequence similarity between strain TR3 and Aeromonas was as high as 99.50%. The genome-wide sequence showed that the base content of the chromosome of strain TR3 is 4,521,851 bp. It contains a plasmid with a length of 9182 bp. All antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) of strain TR3 are located on the chromosome, which means that it h...

Activation of persulfate by heterogeneous nano zero-valent iron/halloysite nanotubes: reaction behavior, mechanism, and implication for tetracycline hydrochloride degradation
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Jul 2. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-28354-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA novel composite (nZVI/HNTs) was prepared via incorporating nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) for degrading tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) with existence of persulfate (PS). The adsorption process of nZVI/HNTs to TCH conformed to the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and its maximum adsorption capacity was 76.62 mg·g-1. Furthermore, the nZVI/HNTs + PS system exhibited satisfactory degradation efficiency (84.21%) for TCH, and stable nZVI/HNTs (Fe leaching < 0....

Visible-light-driven AgI/Bi4O5I2 S-scheme heterojunction for efficient tetracycline hydrochloride removal: Mechanism and degradation pathway
Chemosphere. 2023 Jun 29:139326. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139326. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe existence of excessive tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in the ecological environment has seriously threatened human health, so there is an urgent need to develop a high-performance photocatalyst that can efficiently and greenly remove TCH. Currently, most photocatalysts have the problems of fast recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and low degradation efficiency. Herein, S-scheme AgI/Bi4O5I2 (AB) heterojunctions was constructed for TCH removal. Compared with the single component, the apparent kinetic const...

New insight into the concentration-dependent removal of multiple antibiotics by Chlorella sorokiniana
Bioresour Technol. 2023 Jun 29:129409. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2023.129409. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicroalgae have attracted increasing attention as an environmentally friendly treatment for antibiotics. However, the effect of antibiotic concentration on the removal ability of microalgae with the underlying mechanisms remains unclear. Thus, this work investigates the removal of tetracycline (TET), sulfathiazole (STZ), and ciprofloxacin (CIP) at different concentrations using Chlorella sorokiniana. The results indicate that microalgae have a concentration-dependent effect on antibiotic removal; however, the removal t...
