The formation of Fe < sup > 3+ < /sup > -doxycycline complex is pH dependent: implications to doxycycline bioavailability
J Biol Inorg Chem. 2023 Sep 1. doi: 10.1007/s00775-023-02018-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe interactions of drugs with iron are of interest in relation to the potential effects of iron-rich foods and iron supplements on sorption and bioavailability. Doxycycline (DOX), a member of the tetracycline class of broad-spectrum antibiotics, is frequently administered by oral route. In the digestive tract, DOX can be exposed to iron at different pH values (stomach pH 1.5-4, duodenum pH 5-6, distal jejunum and ileum pH 7-8). In relation to this, we analyzed the impact of pH on Fe3+-DOX complex formation. The optimal conditions...

Are we missing the silver lining of COVID-19 pandemic: An analytical study to determine effects of three COVID-19 peaks on antimicrobial susceptibility of < em > Staphylococcus aureus < /em > isolates
CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals a sharp decline in overall resistance to commonly prescribed antibiotic agents for S. aureus isolates after first peak of COVID-19 cases. However, same trend was not observed in subsequent peaks and probably we are approaching the same resistance levels that were seen prior to COVID-19 pandemic.PMID:37649748 | PMC:PMC10465057 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_2420_22

A Co-based nitrogen-doped lignin carbon catalyst with high stability and wide operating window for rapid degradation of antibiotics
In this study, the Co-based catalyst Co-N/C@CL was synthesized from carboxymethylated lignin obtained by grafting abundant carboxymethyl groups into alkali lignin, in which the presence of these carboxymethyl groups enhanced its water solubility and allowed the formation of stable macromolecular complexes with Co2+. This catalyst exhibited a high specific surface area (521.8 m2·g-1) and a uniform distribution of Co nanoparticles. Consequently, the Co-N/C@CL/PMS system could completely remove 20 ppm tetracycline (TC) in 2 min at a rate of 2.404 min-1. Experimental results and DFT calculations revealed that the synergistic ...

2D g-C < sub > 3 < /sub > N < sub > 4 < /sub > nanosheets functionalized with nickel-doped ZrO < sub > 2 < /sub > nanoparticles for synergistic photodegradation of toxic chemical pollutants
Chemosphere. 2023 Aug 29:139955. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139955. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe photocatalytic removal of toxic chemical pollutants from wastewater has garnered significant attention in recent times owing to its notable removal efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendly characteristics. Nonetheless, this catalytic process necessitates augmented charge separation and distinctive interface properties to facilitate catalytic reactions for water treatment applications. Therefore, in the current study, novel g-C3N4/Ni-doped ZrO2 heterostructured hybrid catalysts have been synthesized via a hydro...

Clinical and histological features and treatment outcomes of patients with Morbihan disease: a systematic review
AbstractMorbihan disease (MD) is considered a rare complication of rosacea, which is difficult to diagnose and challenging to treat. Here, we performed a systematic review of available case reports and case series to summarize key clinical and pathologic features of and successful treatment regimens for MD. We conducted a search of the PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane electronic databases from their inception to the date of search on March 6, 2023. We found that MD affects patients in the fifth decade of life on average, more commonly reported in male than female (69% vs 31%). Clinically, MD affects the eyelids, cheeks...

Preparation of sludge-based biochar loaded with ferromanganese and its removal mechanism of tetracycline hydrochloride
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Aug 30. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29558-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo remove the serious contamination caused by tetracycline hydrochloride, this paper uses the method of impregnation followed by pyrolysis to prepare ferromanganese-loaded sludge-based biochar and investigate its effectiveness in removing tetracycline hydrochloride. The material was characterized by field emission SEM, FTIR, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The possible reaction mechanisms involved in the removal of tetracycline were deduced based on the determination of Mn2+ during the reaction process and XPS characteri...
