Deciphering mechanisms of < em > bla < /em > < sub > NDM < /sub > gene transmission between human and animals: a genomics study of bacterial isolates from various sources in China, 2015 to 2017
ConclusionThis study in a Chinese context suggests that cross-species transmission of certain STs of E. coli harbouring bla NDM on mobile elements, may facilitate the spread of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. Stringent monitoring of bla NDM-bearing E. coli in ecosystems is important.PMID:37707983 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.37.2200925

Approaches for High-throughput Quantification of Periplasmic Recombinant Proteins
N Biotechnol. 2023 Sep 12:S1871-6784(23)00046-8. doi: 10.1016/j.nbt.2023.09.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Gram-negative periplasm is a convenient location for the accumulation of many recombinant proteins including biopharmaceutical products. It is the site of disulphide bond formation, required by some proteins (such as antibody fragments) for correct folding and function. It also permits simpler protein release and downstream processing than cytoplasmic accumulation. As such, targeting of recombinant proteins to the E. coli periplasm is a key strategy in biologic manufacture. However, expression and translocatio...

Photo-Electro-Biochemical H2 Production Using the Carbon Material-Based Cathode Combined with Genetically Engineered Escherichia coli Whole-Cell Biocatalysis
This study constructed a H2-forming biocathode based on a carbon material combined with whole-cell biocatalysis of genetically-engineered-hydrogenase-overproducing Escherichia coli for the photoelectrochemical water splitting for clean H2 production. Low-cost and abundant carbon materials are generally not suitable for H2-forming cathode due to their high overpotential for proton reduction; however, the combination of the reduction of an organic electron mediator on the carbon electrode and the H2 formation with the reduced mediator by the redox enzyme hydrogenase provides a H2-forming cathodic reaction comparable to that ...

Furoic acid-mediated konjac glucomannan/flaxseed gum based green biodegradable antibacterial film for Shine-Muscat grape preservation
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 12;253(Pt 3):126883. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126883. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTConsidering the growing threats to the environment and human health, such as plastic pollution and food spoilage, the development of naturally antibacterial food packaging materials with biodegradable capabilities has recently attracted considerable attention. This work applies the concept of green environmental protection to packaging technology, and a new type of green edible antibacterial packaging film was developed. The basic idea is to incorporate furoic acid (FA), which possesses excellent antibacter...

Similarities and differences of nano-sized levan synthesized by Bacillus haynesii at low and high temperatures: Characterization and bioactivity
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 12:126804. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126804. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLevan is a biopolymer with many different uses. Temperature is an important parameter in biopolymer synthesis. Herein, levan production was carried out from Bacillus haynesii, a thermophilic microorganism, in the temperature range of 4 °C-95 °C. The highest levan production was measured as 10.9 g/L at 37 °C. The synthesized samples were characterized by FTIR and NMR analysis. The particle size of the levan samples varied between 153 and 824.4 nm at different temperatures. In levan samples produced at high temperat...

A metallothionein gene from hard clam Meretrix meretrix: Sequence features, expression patterns, and metal tolerance activities
Dev Comp Immunol. 2023 Sep 12:105057. doi: 10.1016/j.dci.2023.105057. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMetallothioneins (MTs) are low-molecular weight cytoplasmic heavy metal binding proteins. MTs can regulate the concentration of essential or non-essential metals in organisms, and have many important biological functions, including detoxification, trace element metabolism, and anti-oxidation. In the present study, we cloned and characterized a metallothionein gene (designated as MmMT) from the hard clam Meretrix meretrix. The complete cDNA sequence of MmMT contained an open reading frame (ORF) of 629 bp, which encoded a prot...

Time evolution of electrical impedance spectra of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria
Bioelectrochemistry. 2023 Sep 9;155:108557. doi: 10.1016/j.bioelechem.2023.108557. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis research work reports the time evolution of the electrical properties of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria in aqueous suspensions with methyl violet and Lugol; measurements of galvanostatic electrical impedance spectra were made in a frequency range of 10Hz to 100kHz. The magnitude of the impedance as a function of frequency for methicillin-resistant strains, Staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive), and Escherichia coli O157: H7 (gram-negative) in the presence of methyl violet and Lugol, showed that bo...

One-tube RPA-CRISPR Cas12a/Cas13a rapid detection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
Anal Chim Acta. 2023 Oct 16;1278:341757. doi: 10.1016/j.aca.2023.341757. Epub 2023 Aug 26.ABSTRACTAt present, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has caused a serious impact on a global scale. The infection and carrier rate of MRSA in the community is increasing year by year, but there is still no convenient detection system for on-site rapid detection. It is very important to select a rapid detection system to accurately and quickly detect patients infected with MRSA. We have developed a high-efficient single-tube detection platform based on RPA and CRISPR reaction system to detect the genes of mecA and clf...

'Evolutionary poker': an agent-based model of interactome emergence and epistasis tested against Lenski's long-term E. coli experiments
J Physiol. 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.1113/JP284421. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA simple agent-based model is presented that produces results matching the experimental data found by Lenski's group for ≤50,000 generations of Escherichia coli bacteria under continuous selective pressure. Although various mathematical models have been devised previously to model the Lenski data, the present model has advantages in terms of overall simplicity and conceptual accessibility. The model also clearly illustrates a number of features of the evolutionary process that are otherwise not obvious, such as the roles of epistasis and histori...
