Social Isolation of Older Adults, Family, and Formal Caregivers During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Stories and Solutions Through Participatory Action Research
Can J Aging. 2023 Sep 18:1-14. doi: 10.1017/S071498082300048X. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis participatory action research (PAR) aimed to understand the health implications of guidelines impacting social isolation among frail community-dwelling older adults and their family and formal caregivers during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Reflexive thematic analysis (RTA) of data collected from 10 policy/procedural documents revealed four themes: valuing principles, identifying problem(s), setting priorities, and making recommendations. Interviews with 31 participants from Peterborough, Ontario, also revealed ...

Building parameters linked with indoor transmission of SARS-CoV-2
Environ Res. 2023 Sep 15:117156. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2023.117156. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe rapid spread of Coronavirus Disease (2019)(COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has emphasized the importance of understanding and adapting to the indoor remediation of transmissible diseases to decrease the risk for future pandemic threats. While there were many precautions in place to hinder the spread of COVID-19, there has also been a substantial increase of new research on SARS-CoV-2 that can be utilized to further mitigate the transmission risk of this novel virus. This r...

Recombinant Antibodies to Face SARS-CoV-2 Syndemic
Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand). 2023 Jul 31;69(7):24-27. doi: 10.14715/cmb/2023.69.7.4.ABSTRACTIn recent years, increasing interest has been paid to using antibody-based therapies for clinical applications. However, it is unclear whether recombinant antibodies can be combined with other scientific approaches to generate innovative solutions for mitigating severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. In this context, the increase in this virus transmission, the number of infected people, and the interaction between social and biological processes have led to a syndemic, exacerbating the public health problem. Here, we a...

Assuring the Groundwork for Success: Mentorship, Sponsorship, and Allyship for Practicing Anesthesiologists
Anesth Analg. 2023 Oct 1;137(4):754-762. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006646. Epub 2023 Sep 5.ABSTRACTThe challenges facing the health care industry in the post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic world are numerous, jeopardizing wellness, and performance. Maintaining engagement and fulfillment of anesthesiologists in their work is now a critical issue in various practice settings: academic, private practice, and corporate medicine. In this article, we offer insights on how mentorship, sponsorship, and allyship are important in the advancement of the anesthesiology workforce including women and underrepresented mino...

The efficacy of Facebook's vaccine misinformation policies and architecture during the COVID-19 pandemic
Sci Adv. 2023 Sep 15;9(37):eadh2132. doi: 10.1126/sciadv.adh2132. Epub 2023 Sep 15.ABSTRACTOnline misinformation promotes distrust in science, undermines public health, and may drive civil unrest. During the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, Facebook-the world's largest social media company-began to remove vaccine misinformation as a matter of policy. We evaluated the efficacy of these policies using a comparative interrupted time-series design. We found that Facebook removed some antivaccine content, but we did not observe decreases in overall engagement with antivaccine content. Provaccine content was also removed, and ...

Cardiac Tamponade Secondary to Hemorrhagic Pericardial Effusion: A Complication of STEMI
Conclusion: The differential for hemodynamic compromise in a patient with STEMI is broad, but quickly distinguishing pump failure from other life-threatening causes of shock is imperative to dictate time-sensitive management decisions. The presence of a hemorrhagic pericardial effusion in the setting of STEMI is a surrogate marker for a severe infarct and can help the bedside physician determine whether a patient will be better served in the catheterization lab for revascularization or in the operating room for surgical repair.PMID:37711482 | PMC:PMC10498953 | DOI:10.31486/toj.23.0023
