Leukemic-phase mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma
Int J Hematol. 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.1007/s12185-023-03654-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 78-year-old man presenting with leukocytosis was admitted to our hospital. The patient was asymptomatic and showed no lymphadenopathy. Peripheral blood flow cytometry revealed a leukemic-phase B-cell lymphoma with medium-to-large abnormal cells with reticulum. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography revealed abnormal uptake in the right orbit, bone marrow, and spleen. We performed immunological staining and fluorescence in situ hybridization on tissues extracted from the right orbit and bone marrow, which led to the diagno...

Early mortality in German patients with lung cancer: risk factors associated with 30-and 60-day mortality
In this study, we aimed to assess risk factors for 30- and 60-day mortality in German lung cancer patients. In this retrospective cross-sectional analysis, we used data of lung cancer patients treated at LMU Hospital Munich between 2015 and 2019. We categorized patients into 30-day mortality, 60 day-mortality, and longer survival. We used Student's t-test and ANOVA to compare means and Chi2-test to compare frequencies. We used logistic regression analysis to identify factors associated with a risk for early mortality. Of the 2454 lung cancer patients, 2.0% (n = 50) died within 30 and 1.7% (n = 41) within 30 to 60 days of d...

“The Greatest Scientist of All Time” says Scientific American. Who is it?
BY MIKE MAGEE When it comes to our earthly survival as a human species, words are often under-powered and off-the-mark. Clearer concepts, definitions and terms are required for clarity. Here are five terms that are useful and worth remembering: Planetary Boundaries Earth Systems Human Perturbations Planetary Scale Destabilization Holocene Epoch vs. Anthropogenic Epoch  These terms all tie back to a single source – a child of World War II, only seven when his home in Amsterdam was overrun by Nazis. His father was a waiter, his mother a cook in a local hospital. He’d later recall with a sh...

Antiretroviral treatment is less effective at reducing gut microbiome-associated inflammation and T cell activation in people living with HIV in rural versus urban Zimbabwe
Res Sq. 2023 Aug 31:rs.3.rs-3300723. doi: 10.21203/rs.3.rs-3300723/v1. Preprint.ABSTRACTThe widespread availability of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for people living with HIV (PLWH) has dramatically reduced mortality and improved life expectancy. However, even with suppression of HIV-1 replication, chronic immune activation and elevated inflammation persist. Chronic immune activation has been linked to a pro-inflammatory gut microbiome composition, exacerbated by compromised intestinal barrier integrity that occurs after HIV infection. Individuals living in urban versus rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa have differences in...
