Dialysis costs for a health system participating in value-based care
CONCLUSIONS: In a major health system, crash starts demonstrated the highest cost and hospital utilization, a pattern that persisted after dialysis initiation. Developing strategies to promote optimal starts will improve VBC contract performance.PMID:37616151 | DOI:10.37765/ajmc.2023.89410

Needle Direction and Distance of Arteriovenous Fistula Cannulation in Hemodialysis Adequacy; a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: Overall comparison of the results qualitatively and quantitatively indicated uncertainty about the effects of direction and distance of AVF cannulation on HD adequacy outcomes. More studies with high-quality designs, such as RCTs, are required to better understand and adjudicate the effects of needle direction and distance of AVF cannulation on HD adequacy outcomes.PMID:37609532 | PMC:PMC10440757 | DOI:10.22037/aaem.v11i1.1943

Exchange of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Cannulas for Hemodialysis Catheters in Children Requiring Renal Replacement Therapy
CONCLUSION: Venous ECMO cannula exchange for a hemodialysis catheter in children requiring renal replacement therapy after decannulation is possible as a bridge to a permanent hemodialysis or peritoneal catheter if renal function does not recover, while supporting vein preservation.PMID:37609992 | DOI:10.1177/00031348231198119

Differences in mental health status during the COVID-19 pandemic between patients undergoing in-center hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis
CONCLUSIONS: In-center hemodialysis patients more often experienced mental symptoms compared to peritoneal dialysis patients from September 2020 to June 2021, which corresponds to the second lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mental health-related quality-of-life did not differ between in-center hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: Netherlands Trial Register NL6519, date of registration: 22 August, 2017.PMID:37606844 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-023-01747-0

Effects of live music during hemodialysis treatments in pediatric patients
CONCLUSIONS: In our small study sample, live music improved some physiological and psychological indices in pediatric hemodialysis patients. Further research evaluating larger samples with longitudinal follow-up is required.PMID:37594670 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-023-01717-6

Incidence and risk factors of cognitive dysfunction in hemodialysis patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The most important risk factors for cognitive dysfunction associated with hemodialysis might be female gender, old age, diabetes, and stroke. Close attention should be paid to such patients for early prevention.PMID:37592399 | DOI:10.1111/sdi.13171
