Influence of Care on the Prevention of Bacteremia in Hemodialysis: Systematic Review
Nephrol Nurs J. 2023 Jul-Aug;50(4):333-344.ABSTRACTCentral venous catheter-related infection is the most common complication in patients on hemodialysis. Nursing care is essential for its maintenance, minimizing risk factors, and avoiding complications, such as bacteremia. A systematic review was conducted to identify the influence of nursing care on the prevention of bacteremia due to hemodialysis catheter. The primary endpoint was the bacteremia rate measured as number of events per 1000 catheter days. The rate of bacteremia in the studies ranged from 0.2 to 5.47 events per 1000 catheter days after the application of nur...

The Effect of Dialysis Shift on Depression and Sleep Disturbances in Patients on Chronic Hemodialysis
Nephrol Nurs J. 2023 Jul-Aug;50(4):293-303.ABSTRACTStudies suggest that the hemodialysis (HD) shift on which a patient dialyzes impacts sleep disorders, depressive symptoms, quality of life, and mortality. However, study findings have been limited and inconsistent. The purpose of this project was to determine the relationship between HD shifts (morning, afternoon, and evening), and depression and sleep quality disturbance. Forty-one participants were recruited to participate in this project. Participants on the third shift had the highest levels of depression (M = 11.67) and poorest sleep quality (M = 14.5), compared to th...

Obesity, Weight Gain, and Fluid Overload in Peritoneal Dialysis
Front Nephrol. 2022 Jun 28;2:880097. doi: 10.3389/fneph.2022.880097. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTObesity is a global epidemic that has a complicated pathogenesis as well as impact on the outcome of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. In this review, the prevalence of obesity in incident PD patients as well as the phenomenon of new-onset glucose intolerance after PD will be reviewed. Published literature on the effect of obesity on the survival and incidence of cardiovascular disease in PD patients will be discussed. Particular emphasis would be put on literature that compared the impact of obesity on the outcome of hemodialysi...

Sodium First Approach, to Reset Our Mind for Improving Management of Sodium, Water, Volume and Pressure in Hemodialysis Patients, and to Reduce Cardiovascular Burden and Improve Outcomes
Front Nephrol. 2022 Jul 7;2:935388. doi: 10.3389/fneph.2022.935388. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTNew physiologic findings related to sodium homeostasis and pathophysiologic associations require a new vision for sodium, fluid and blood pressure management in dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease patients. The traditional dry weight probing approach that has prevailed for many years must be reviewed in light of these findings and enriched by availability of new tools for monitoring and handling sodium and water imbalances. A comprehensive and integrated approach is needed to improve further cardiac health in hemodialysis (HD...

Levels of Soluble NKG2D Ligands and Cancer History in Patients Starting Hemodialysis
DISCUSSION: Even though this investigation lacked a control cohort and serial measurement of parameters, expression patterns of NKG2D ligands were comprehensively described, and the significance of cancer in patients starting HD was elucidated for the first time. Elevated levels of soluble NKG2D ligands occurred potentially due to complex mechanisms of oxidative stress, with insufficient metabolism and excretion in a uremic milieu, but they might mask the significance of elevations in serum levels of soluble NKG2DLs in patients with a cancer history.PMID:37674990 | PMC:PMC10479672 | DOI:10.3389/fneph.2022.875207
