Epidemiological analysis over two years of SARS-CoV-2 circulation in southern Brazil: old and novel predictors of COVID-19 outcome
In conclusion, our results contribute to current knowledge by demonstrating that factors described at different times remain associated with COVID-19 over the pandemic and by identifying novel predictors of COVID-19 outcome.PMID:37659686 | DOI:10.1016/j.actatropica.2023.107007

Inflow Artery Aneurysmal Degeneration After Long Term Native Arteriovenous Fistula for Haemodialysis
CONCLUSION: Aneurysmal degeneration of the inflow artery is an unusual complication during long term follow up of AVFs. Aneurysm excision and, in general, autogenous graft interposition using the saphenous or ipsilateral arm vein is a safe and effective strategy.PMID:37659740 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejvs.2023.08.063

Serum Magnesium Levels in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease: Is There a Relationship with Inflammation Status?
CONCLUSION: Mg2+ serum levels were negatively correlated with inflammatory status in patients with CKD on dialysis.PMID:37658221 | DOI:10.1007/s12011-023-03829-3

The toxicokinetic and extracorporeal removal of bongkrekic acid during blood purification therapies: A case report
We report a rare case of BA poisoning with a complication of liver failure and acute kidney damage. The patient expired, even with supportive care, plasmapheresis and hemodialysis. Analysis of whole blood, serum, urine and dialysate concentrations showed limited efficacy of CRRT in removing BA from blood. In contrast, there was significant extraction of BA from Plasmapheresis.PMID:37652101 | DOI:10.1016/j.toxicon.2023.107275

Prognostic Value of Elevated Plasma Galectin-3 for Renal Adverse Events in Dialysis Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians can use Gal-3 as a standalone forecaster of all-cause mortality and CV events for hemodialysis patients because correlates with these outcomes. Further research is necessary to determine its predictive value for CV mortality. Investigators need to perform further research with a large sample size on the predictive value of Gal-3 for dialysis patients, particularly PD patients, from a variety of ethnic backgrounds to improve the precise treatment for high-risk patients.PMID:37652423

Systems Innovations to Increase Home Dialysis Utilization
Clin J Am Soc Nephrol. 2023 Aug 31. doi: 10.2215/CJN.0000000000000298. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGlobally, there is an interest to increase home dialysis utilization. The most recent USRDS data reports that 13.3% of incident dialysis patients in the US are started on home dialysis, while the majority of patients continue to initiate kidney replacement therapy with in-center hemodialysis. In order to affect meaningful change, a multi-faceted innovative approach will be needed to substantially increase the use of home dialysis. Patient and provider education is the first step to enhance home dialysis knowledge awareness....

Etiology and clinical characteristics of acute viral hepatitis in South Korea during 2020-2021: a prospective multicenter study
Sci Rep. 2023 Aug 31;13(1):14271. doi: 10.1038/s41598-023-40775-5.ABSTRACTThis prospective, 12-center study investigated the etiology and clinical characteristics of acute viral hepatitis (AVH) during 2020-2021 in South Korea, and the performance of different diagnostic methods for hepatitis E virus (HEV). We enrolled 428 patients with acute hepatitis, of whom 160 (37.4%) were diagnosed with AVH according to predefined serologic criteria. The clinical data and risk factors for AVH were analyzed. For hepatitis E patients, anti-HEV IgM and IgG were tested with two commercial ELISA kits (Abia and Wantai) with HEV-RNA real-tim...

Combined Effect of Early Physical Exercise and Stereotactic Hematoma Evacuation in Patients with Cerebral Hemorrhage Undergoing Hemodialysis
CONCLUSIONS: Early postoperative physical function exercise following stereotactic hematoma evacuation showed beneficial effects in hemodialysis patients with cerebral hemorrhage. It effectively reduced operation time, restored nerve and limb function, improved daily activity ability, and reduced the incidence of related complications. These approaches hold crucial clinical significance.PMID:37652407

Interventions for fatigue in people with kidney failure requiring dialysis
CONCLUSIONS: Exercise, aromatherapy, massage and acupressure may improve fatigue compared to placebo, standard care or no intervention. Pharmacological and other non-pharmacological interventions had uncertain effects on fatigue or fatigue-related outcomes in people receiving dialysis. Future adequately powered, high-quality studies are likely to change the estimated effects of interventions for fatigue and fatigue-related outcomes in people receiving dialysis.PMID:37651553 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD013074.pub2
