Frequent vascular access thrombosis in a patient with end stage kidney disease on hemodialysis
This article reviews the association between hypercoagulability and VAT and the high prevalence of hypercoagulable states in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). This article reviews the role of antithrombotic and anticoagulant medications in preventing VAT. The article concludes by reviewing the unique challenges of using vitamin K antagonists in patients with ESKD.PMID:37641427 | DOI:10.1111/sdi.13172

REIN: a tool at the service of the patients
Nephrol Ther. 2023 Aug 28;18(S2):54-58. doi: 10.1016/S1769-7255(22)00569-7.ABSTRACTOn the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the REIN (French Renal Epidemiology and Information Network), a summary work on the contributions of the national French ESKD register was carried out. On the issue of patients’ perspectives, the following key messages were retained. As shown by the SONG (Standardised Outcomes in Nephrology) initiative, the criteria for judging the dialysis treatment that patients and care-givers prefer are not those that are traditionally found in published studies. For example, for haemodialysis, they are fatigu...

Prevalence of End Stage Kidney Disease and distribution of treatment modalities
Nephrol Ther. 2023 Aug 28;18(S2):25-30. doi: 10.1016/S1769-7255(22)00563-6.ABSTRACTOn the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the REIN (French Renal Epidemiology and Information Network), a summary work on the contributions of the national French ESKD register was carried out. On the issue of ESKD prevalence, the following key messages were retained. While chronic kidney disease affects all age groups, there always are more patients to treat in the older age groups, with a median age of 71.1 years (IIQ 60.3-80.0) under dialysis and 58.7 years (IIQ 47.4-68.3) under renal transplant. Despite an increase in transplant activit...

Rhabdomyolysis-induced acute kidney injury after administration of a red yeast rice supplement: A case report
CONCLUSION: We speculate that statins, the main lipid-lowering component of RYR, or a combination of statins and abiraterone, will increase the risk of rhabdomyolysis.PMID:37637685 | PMC:PMC10450378 | DOI:10.12998/wjcc.v11.i23.5547

Patient-Centered Home Hemodialysis: Approaches and Prescription
Clin J Am Soc Nephrol. 2023 Aug 28. doi: 10.2215/CJN.0000000000000292. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWriting a home hemodialysis (HD) prescription is a complex, multifactorial process that requires the incorporation of patient values, preferences, and lifestyle. Knowledge of the different options available in terms of home HD modality (conventional, nocturnal, short daily, and alternate nightly) is also important when customizing a prescription. Finally, an understanding of the different home HD machines currently approved for use at home, their different attributes and limitations help guide providers when formulating the...

Reprocessing and reuse of dialyzers: A technological solution for balancing cost and quality in lower and middle-income countries
Int J Artif Organs. 2023 Aug 28:3913988231194421. doi: 10.1177/03913988231194421. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHemodialysis is the commonest kidney replacement therapy (KRT) globally and rapidly growing in developing countries, while in developed countries it is reaching a plateau. The penetration of hemodialysis (HD) varies widely among countries and is largely influenced by socioeconomics, healthcare financing, particularly by government, local infrastructure, healthcare workforce, health system characteristics, and affordability of the population. Biomedical equipment, consumables, disposables, and labor are major cost...
