A real-world pharmacovigilance study of abaloparatide based on the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS)
ConclusionOur study provided a deeper and broader understanding of abaloparatide ’s safety profiles, which would help healthcare professionals to mitigate the risk of AEs in clinical practice, a low number of unexpected AEs supporting ongoing additional pharmacovigilance.

Tinnitus-on the interplay between emotion and cognition. German version
HNO. 2023 Aug 15. doi: 10.1007/s00106-023-01338-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSubjective tinnitus (hereafter tinnitus) is often considered and studied as a perceptual phenomenon. Accordingly, various abnormalities in the area of cognitive processing have been reported in patients with tinnitus. At the same time, the disorder is characterized by considerable emotional distress, which is associated with a high comorbidity of affective disorders. Here, we aim to outline the close link between cognition and emotion, and how current research from the field of cognitive neuroscience examines the processing and acquisition of ...

Stress and suffering from tinnitus-a  psychosomatic approach
HNO. 2023 Aug 14. doi: 10.1007/s00106-023-01340-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe development and processing of tinnitus is often associated with stress. There are many publications on this subject that have investigated possible connections between stress perception and tinnitus symptoms using different concepts and different test inventories. In this review, we present the development of Selye's concept of stress using the transactional stress model of Lazarus and its transfer to patients suffering from tinnitus. The literature evaluating the influence of stress on tinnitus symptoms with partly very different concepts...

Acceptability of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Tinnitus: A Study With Veterans and Nonveterans
CONCLUSIONS: Despite strong research support, CBT was rated as less acceptable than a different, less widely empirically supported treatment. Veterans' ratings of acceptability were lower than those of nonveterans across all treatments.PMID:37566882 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJA-23-00020

The 5-Steps to Relieve Tinnitus
My patient T.K. was a wreck. He looked like he hadn’t slept in a week. I asked him what was going on. “It’s nothing you can fix, doc,” he said. “I’ve been to three specialists, and they all told me the same thing… “I’ve got tinnitus, and I just have to live with it.” Luckily, I was able to help him. Tinnitus is an aggravating, nerve-racking, and unseen condition. The constant ringing in your ears robs you of sleep, makes you miserable as it drowns out your hearing, and, over time, makes you more prone to illness. Tinnitus also shatters your focus and concentration. Sadly, up to 25% of the U.S. populatio...

An Update on Temporal Bone Paragangliomas
Opinion statementTemporal bone paragangliomas (TBPs) are indolent, classically benign and highly vascular neoplasms of the temporal bone. There are two types of TBPs, tympanomastoid paragangliomas (TMPs) and tympanojugular paragangliomas (TJPs). The most common symptoms are hearing loss and pulsatile tinnitus. Diagnostic workup, besides conventional physical and laboratory examinations, includes biochemical testing of catecholamine and genetic testing of SDHx gene mutations as well as radiological examination. Although surgery is traditionally the mainstay of treatment, it is challenging due to the close proximity of tumor...

Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss Related to a Skull Base Spontaneous Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak: A Case Report and Literature Review
Ear Nose Throat J. 2023 Aug 8:1455613231191372. doi: 10.1177/01455613231191372. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSpontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a rare condition characterized by orthostatic headache, pulsatile tinnitus, vertigo, nausea, and fluctuating hearing loss; this latter seems to be due to the development of cochlear endolymphatic hydrops following negative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure transmitted to the perilymphatic space through a patent cochlear aqueduct. We here describe a case of bilateral progressive sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) due to intracranial hypotension caused by an undiagnosed s...

Interventions against hearing loss are an integral component of successful tinnitus therapy. German version
HNO. 2023 Aug 8. doi: 10.1007/s00106-023-01333-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTinnitus very often develops from acute or chronic hearing loss, mainly inner ear deafness. The frequency of the tinnitus mostly corresponds to the frequency range of the hearing loss and is enhanced by down-regulation of inhibition in the central auditory pathway for these frequencies, in addition to focused attention and enhanced arousal for the disturbing sound. Therefore, interventions to improve hearing such as mid-ear surgery or-more often-electronic devices including hearing aids or cochlear implants (CI) are important for the treatment ...
