Depression and Risk of Stroke in Midaged Women: A Prospective Longitudinal Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Depression is a strong risk factor for stroke in midaged women, with the association partially explained by lifestyle and physiological factors. Further studies of midaged and older women from the same population are needed to confirm whether depression is particularly important in younger women and to inform targeted intervention approaches.

Life's Simple 7 and Risk of Incident Stroke: The Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In both blacks and whites, better cardiovascular health, on the basis of the LS7 score, is associated with lower risk of stroke, and a small difference in scores was an important stroke determinant.

Sonic Hedgehog Signaling Pathway Mediates Cerebrolysin-Improved Neurological Function After Stroke Basic Sciences
Conclusions— These results demonstrate that the Shh pathway mediates cerebrolysin-enhanced neurogenesis and white matter remodeling and improves functional recovery in rats after stroke.

The SOAR Stroke Score Predicts Inpatient and 7-Day Mortality in Acute Stroke Brief Reports
Conclusions— A simple score based on 4 easily obtainable variables at the point of care may potentially help predict early stroke mortality.

Chinese Medicine Neuroaid Efficacy on Stroke Recovery: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Randomized Study Major Clinical Trial
Conclusions— MLC601 is statistically no better than placebo in improving outcomes at 3 months when used among patients with acute ischemic stroke of intermediate severity. Longer treatment duration and follow-up of participants with treatment initiated after 48 hours may be considered in future studies. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00554723.

Risk Factors, Clinical Presentation, and Neuroimaging Findings of Neonatal Perforator Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Previously described risk factors for developing neonatal main artery stroke are probably also associated with neonatal perforator stroke. Perforator stroke is often asymptomatic, but cranial ultrasound is a reliable diagnostic tool in diagnosing perforator stroke.

Asymmetric Dimethylarginine in Response to Recombinant Tissue-Type Plasminogen Activator and Erythropoietin in Acute Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Our data underscore the potential benefit of EPO in ischemic stroke. The hypothesis from experimental data, that EPO treatment increases ADMA in stroke patients, was disproved. Further studies are needed to clarify whether decreased ADMA might contribute to therapeutic rtPA effects.

Modulating the Motor System by Action Observation After Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— We found that action observation activates specific motor plans in damaged motor circuits after stroke, and this activity is related to motor capability to perform the same actions. Cortical motor activity during action observation may be relevant to motor learning, and to motor relearning in stroke rehabilitation.

Analysis of the Costs and Payments of a Coordinated Stroke Center and Regional Stroke Network Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— SLNI total costs remained consistent over time and were slightly lower than previously published estimates, suggesting that a focused, streamlined stroke program can be implemented without a significant economic impact. This finding further demonstrates that providing comprehensive stroke care with improved access and treatment may be financially feasible for other hospitals.

Spouses of stroke survivors may be at risk for poor cognitive functioning: a cross-sectional population-based study.
CONCLUSIONS: Spousal caregivers of stroke survivors may be at risk for poor cognitive functioning. More work is needed to identify the processes that may contribute to the diminished cognitive capacity among these adults so that interventions may be developed to reduce caregiver burden and promote cognitive health. Psychosocial experiences and needs of Australian caregivers of people with stroke: prognosis messages, caregiver resilience, and relationships.
CONCLUSIONS: Particular attention should be paid to how prognosis is conveyed and whether appropriate outpatient services are available. Clinicians should also consider discussing appropriate caregiver coping strategies and the quality of the relationship between the stroke survivor and caregiver. PMID: 23893835 [PubMed - in process]

Fatigue and pain: relationships with physical performance and patient beliefs after stroke.
CONCLUSION: Fatigue and pain are common after stroke and are negatively correlated with outcomes important to rehabilitation. Efforts focused on examining the impact of interventions on fatigue and pain are warranted. It is possible that changes to these body structure limitations could positively impact functional recovery and community re-entry after stroke. PMID: 23893834 [PubMed - in process]

Balance is associated with quality of life in chronic stroke.
CONCLUSION: In the chronic stroke population, balance impairment and fall risk are associated with lower QOL scores. If balance can be improved and maintained into the chronic phases of stroke, it is likely that individuals will benefit with improved QOL. PMID: 23893833 [PubMed - in process]

Retinal Microvascular Changes and Risk of Stroke: The Singapore Malay Eye Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Retinal microvascular changes are related to an increased risk of stroke in Asian Malay, consistent with data from white populations. Retinal imaging improves the discrimination and stratification of stroke risk beyond that of established risk factors by a significant but small margin.

Ideal Cardiovascular Health Metrics and the Risks of Ischemic and Intracerebral Hemorrhagic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— We observed a clear inverse gradient relationship between the number of ideal CVH metrics and the risk of stroke in a Chinese population, supporting the importance of ideal health behaviors and factors in stroke prevention.
