Acute Hospital, Community, and Indirect Costs of Stroke Associated With Atrial Fibrillation: Population-Based Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In our population study, AF-stroke was associated with substantially higher total, acute hospital, nursing home, and general practitioner costs per patient. Targeted programs to identify AF and prevent AF-stroke may have significant economic benefits, in addition to health benefits.

Depression increases stroke hospitalization cost: an analysis of 17,010 stroke patients in 2008 by race and gender.
Conclusion. Depression in stroke patients is associated with increased hospitalization costs. Higher stroke cost among blacks may reflect the impact of comorbidities and the delay in care of serious health conditions. Attention to early detection of depression in stroke patients might reduce inpatient healthcare costs. PMID: 23555070 [PubMed]

Outcome determinants of stroke in a brazilian primary stroke center.
Conclusions. The stroke mortality and stroke outcome determinants found in the present study do not remarkably differ from studies carried out in developed countries. Stroke prognosis studies are crucial to better understand the high burden of stroke in Brazil. PMID: 25580352 [PubMed]

Community-Based Case-Control Study of Childhood Stroke Risk Associated With Congenital Heart Disease Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— CHD is an important childhood stroke risk factor. Children who undergo CHD surgery remain at elevated risk outside the perioperative period and would benefit from optimized long-term stroke prevention strategies.

In-Hospital Stroke Recurrence and Stroke After Transient Ischemic Attack: Frequency and Risk Factors Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In-hospital stroke recurrence was low with optimal current management. Patients with a history of TIA, severe symptomatic carotid stenosis, or uncommon causes of stroke were at higher risk. Pneumonia was associated with a higher risk of stroke recurrence in patients with initial TIA or minor stroke but not in the overall population studied. Aphasia may bias the detection rate by concealing new neurological symptoms.

Insomnia and health-related quality of life in stroke.
CONCLUSION: The findings show that stroke survivors who experienced insomnia had a reduced overall HRQoL and were impaired in the energy and thinking domains of HRQoL. Early screening for sleep disturbance would be beneficial to prevent later development of post-stroke insomnia. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions are suggested to improve HRQoL in stroke patients with insomnia. PMID: 25908494 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

{beta}-Blockers, Pneumonia, and Outcome After Ischemic Stroke: Evidence From Virtual International Stroke Trials Archive Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In this large nonrandomized comparison, on-stroke BB was associated with reduced mortality. Prestroke and on-stroke BB were inversely associated with incidence of nosocomial pneumonia. Randomized trials investigating the potential of β-blockade in acute stroke may be warranted.

The pooled incidence of post-stroke seizure in 102 008 patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis showed that seizures occurred in about 6.93% of people with stroke. Seizures occurred more commonly after hemorrhagic stroke and when stroke occurred in the cortical region. PMID: 25920619 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Left Atrial Enlargement and Stroke Recurrence: The Northern Manhattan Stroke Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusion— Moderate to severe LAE was an independent marker of recurrent cardioembolic or cryptogenic stroke in a multiethnic cohort of ischemic stroke patients. Further research is needed to determine whether anticoagulant use may reduce risk of recurrence in ischemic stroke patients with moderate to severe LAE.

Clinical Predictors of Accurate Prehospital Stroke Recognition Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— EMS providers recognized 3 quarters of the patients with ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack; however, half of EMS-suspected strokes were false positives. Documentation of a Cincinnati Prehospital Stroke Scale was associated with higher EMS stroke recognition sensitivity and PPV.

Family History in Young Patients With Stroke Brief Reports
Conclusions— Although present in about a third of patients, a family history of stroke is not specifically related to stroke pathogenic subtypes in patients with young stroke. Young women with stroke more often report stroke in the maternal lineage. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00414583.

Risk Factors of Ischemic Stroke and Subsequent Outcome in Patients Receiving Hemodialysis Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Incidence of stroke is high in patients with ESRD on hemodialysis with high case-fatality. Incident hemodialysis patients had the highest stroke incidence. Many, but not all, important risk factors commonly associated with stroke in the general population were not associated with stroke in patients receiving hemodialysis.

Differences Between US and UK Adults in Stroke Preparedness: Evidence From Parallel Population-Based Community Surveys Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Overall, stroke recognition and response were moderate. US participants were modestly better at recognizing stroke, although there was little difference in response to stroke. Future stroke awareness interventions could focus more on stroke outcome expectations and developing a greater understanding of stroke among the public.

Rates and Determinants of 5-Year Outcomes After Atrial Fibrillation-Related Stroke: A Population Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— AF-stroke is associated with considerable long-term morbidity, fatality, stroke recurrence, and nursing home requirement. Adequately resourced national AF strategies to improve AF detection and prevention are needed.

Rodent stroke model guidelines for preclinical stroke trials (1st edition).
RODENT STROKE MODEL GUIDELINES FOR PRECLINICAL STROKE TRIALS (1ST EDITION). J Exp Stroke Transl Med. 2009 Jan 1;2(2):2-27 Authors: Liu S, Zhen G, Meloni BP, Campbell K, Winn HR Abstract Translational stroke research is a challenging task that needs long term team work of the stroke research community. Highly reproducible stroke models with excellent outcome consistence are essential for obtaining useful data from preclinical stroke trials as well as for improving inter-lab comparability. However, our review of literature shows that the infarct variation coefficient of commonly performed stroke models r...
