Impact of Female Sex on Clinical Outcomes in the FIRE AND ICE Trial of Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation Original Articles
Conclusions: After catheter ablation of paroxysmal AF, female sex was associated with an almost 40% increase in the risks of primary efficacy failure and cardiovascular rehospitalization. Primary efficacy failure was also adversely impacted by a history of direct current cardioversion, whereas hypertension had a negative impact on cardiovascular rehospitalization. History of AF was the only predictor of repeat ablation. Clinical Trial Registration: URL: https://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT01490814.

Walking for subjects with type 2 diabetes: A Systematic Review And Joint Amd/Sid/Sismes Evidence-Based Practical Guideline
Regular exercise is considered a cornerstone in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It improves glucose control and cardiovascular risk factors, contributes to weight loss, and also improves general well-being, likely playing a role in the prevention of chronic complications of diabetes. However, compliance to exercise recommendations is generally inadequate in subjects with T2DM. Walking is the most ancestral form of physical activity in humans, easily applicable in daily life. It may represent, in many patients, a first simple step towards lifestyle changes.

The sixth edition of the WHO manual on semen examination: ensuring quality and standardization in basic examination of human ejaculates
A basic semen investigation has established principles that are necessary for ascertaining reliable and internationally comparable results. Although these principles have been present in the WHO manual since its inception, the baseline issue across most published studies and practice in reproductive medicine (in which the male is considered) is repetitive failure to adhere to these principles, thereby leading to relevant comparable data and accuracy. To address this failure, the sixth edition of the WHO manual includes revised basic methods, and a complementary formal standard of the International Standards Organization (IS...

Extended semen examinations in the sixth edition of the WHO Laboratory Manual for the Examination and Processing of Human Semen: contributing to the understanding of the function of the male reproductive system
In the sixth edition of the World Health Organization manual for the examination and processing of human semen, extended examination methods to provide key diagnostics in the investigation of the male reproductive system function are elaborated. These go beyond the basic analysis of semen and may be useful in more specifically guiding the clinical characterization of fertile or infertile men. Among the extended examinations included in the chapter, the use of multiparametric scoring for sperm morphological defects, sperm DNA fragmentation, and the roles for computer-assisted analysis of sperm or semen are arguably those th...

What advances may the future bring to the diagnosis, treatment, and care of male sexual and reproductive health?
Over the past 40 years, since the publication of the original WHO Laboratory Manual for the Examination and Processing of Human Semen, the laboratory methods used to evaluate semen markedly changed and benefited from improved precision and accuracy, as well as the development of new tests and improved, standardized methodologies. Herein, we present the impact of the changes put forth in the sixth edition together with our views of evolving technologies that may change the methods used for the routine semen analysis, up-and-coming areas for the development of new procedures, and diagnostic approaches that will help to exten...

A TEAM Approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Gastroenterology and Hepatology
World events have pushed issues of racial and ethnic inequality into the spotlight. As a result, organizations and institutions are now prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). To foster DEI in gastroenterology and hepatology (GI), robust, actionable steps are required. The outcome of successful DEI work is excellence; improved patient outcomes, particularly where health disparities exist and are persistent; advancement of the GI field; and a workforce that better reflects the growing diversity of the United States.

College Student Dating Partner Drinking Profiles: Differences in Relationship Functioning and Relationship-Specific Alcohol Expectancies.
Conclusions/Importance: Findings indicate that there are several distinct classes of dating couples that differ in relationship problems and beliefs about alcohol's impact on their relationship. The Irrational Food Beliefs Scale: Validation of the Italian Version in Patients with Obesity
This study aimed to propose the Italian version of the IFBS and examine its psychometric properties. The tool was translated into Italian and administered to 503 Italian-speaking patients with obesity and 45 healthy controls. The clinical group also completed the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) interview, and the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90). Principal factor analysis identified that 51.6% of the variance was accounted for by six factors, which we termed ‘self-deception on eating and weight control’, ‘beliefs about eating and emotion regulation’, ‘low tolerance for eating control’, ‘beliefs about eating an...

Positive beliefs about anorexia nervosa and muscle dysmorphia are associated with eating disorder symptomatology.
CONCLUSIONS: Although preliminary, these findings suggest that, among young men and women, positive beliefs about anorexia nervosa and muscle dysmorphia may contribute to the development and maintenance of these conditions. Some symptoms of muscle dysmorphia may be perceived as ego-syntonic, providing another parallel with anorexia nervosa. PMID: 25690746 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Second, to determine the predictive effects of unhealthy core beliefs on exercise beliefs. METHOD: A convenience sample of 185 young female exercisers completed the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI), the Exercise Beliefs Questionnaire (EBQ) and the Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ). RESULTS: The participants' mean scores on the EDI were as follows: drive for thinness=0.69 (SD=0.82); body dissatisfaction=1.30 (SD=0.86); and bulimia=0.33 (SD=0.42). There were significant, pos...
