In this study, we focused on two pathways of cardiomyocytes or heart cells: the Hippo pathway, which is involved in stopping renewal of adult cardiomyocytes, and the dystrophin glycoprotein complex (DGC) pathway, essential for cardiomyocyte normal functions." Previous work had hinted that components of the DGC pathway may somehow interact with members of the Hippo pathway. The researchers genetically engineered mice to lack genes involved in one or both pathways, and then determined the ability of the heart to repair an injury. These studies showed for the first time that dystroglycan 1, a component of the DGC pathw...

Want One of These Full-Body Scanners At Your Practice?
Moles can be mysterious. Often not a cause for concern, a mole is a cluster of pigmented cells that can appear on nearly any part of the body. Rarely do moles evolve into melanoma, but monitoring a mole or any other lesion is critical to stop it from becoming precancerous. Imaging Pioneer Canfield Scientific recently launched a commercial version of the VECTRA WB360, a whole-body imaging system that can detect any kind of lesion or skin condition in a simple scan.Typically, a dermatologist observes the growth of a lesion by having a medical photographer snap photos of the lesion every time the patient comes into his or her...

The only perfect cancer statistic is an imperfect one
As an oncologist, I spend my days with women and men diagnosed with cancer. My patients, particularly my advanced-stage or Stage 4 (metastatic) patients, often ask what they did wrong. How did they end up with metastatic cancer? They share with me the subtle accusations made by friends, family and acquaintances that somehow they brought this on themselves. “If only Susan had done her screening mammograms faithfully, she never would be in this position.” “Did you hear Bob has metastatic melanoma? I bet he wishes he had worn sunscreen!” “I’m sorry to hear that your cancer came back  — did you follow your docto...

Widespread hype gives false hope to many cancer patients
After Michael Uvanni’s older brother, James, was diagnosed with a deadly form of skin cancer, it seemed as if everyone told the family what they wanted to hear: Have hope. You can beat this, and we are here to help. The brothers met with doctors at a half-dozen of the country’s best hospitals, all with impressive credentials that inspired confidence. Michael Uvanni was in awe when he visited the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, one of the world’s most respected cancer hospitals. It was like seeing the Grand Canyon, said Uvanni, 66, of Rome, N.Y. “You never get used to the size and scope.”...

In this study we demonstrate the use of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-based epigenome editing to alter cell response to inflammatory environments by repressing inflammatory cytokine cell receptors, specifically TNFR1 and IL1R1. This has applications for many inflammatory-driven diseases. It could be applied for arthritis or to therapeutic cells that are being delivered to inflammatory environments that need to be protected from inflammation." In chronic back pain, for example, slipped or herniated discs are a result of damaged tissue when inflammation causes cells to create molec...

A Nanoparticle Cancer Vaccine Effective Against Multiple Varieties of Cancer
The most important projects in cancer research are those that might produce therapies effective against many different types of cancer. There are too many varieties of cancer and individual tumors can evolve too rapidly for the research community to achieve its goals by working on highly specific therapies. To defeat cancer within the next few decades, the aim must be to produce broadly effective therapies, targeting common mechanisms and vulnerabilities shared by many or all cancers. There projects cost the same as more narrowly applicable approaches, but are much more cost-effective for the results they might produce. Th...

Don ’t let kids use tanning beds
4.9 million — yes, million — people are diagnosed with skin cancer every year in the United States. It costs an estimated $8.1 billion —with a “B — to treat those skin cancers, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Do I have your attention? I hope so. The problem is we don’t have enough attention. There is no other way to explain why too many states still allow those under 18 to access tanning beds across this country. Have we made progress? Yes, but not nearly enough according to a research paper and editorial published today in JAMA Dermatology. Continue reading ... Your patients are rating you...
