The Evident Good of Treating Aging as a Medical Condition
It seems a little strange that advocates for aging research must still make the argument that it is a good thing to prevent people from becoming sick and dying. This seems self-evident! It is true that prevention and cure of disease is a goal with widespread support when discussing specific diseases or age-related conditions. Yet, somehow, as soon as one starts to talk about treating aging as a medical condition, the root cause of the majority of disease and suffering, we are right back to objections that amount to defending a world in which people become sick and die. It is a strange situation that is hard to understand. ...

A Powerful Partnership: AI and Humans Take on Healthcare Challenges
The following is a guest article by Christopher Larkin, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Concord Technologies. Artificial intelligence (AI) is pervasive in our daily decisions. We are assisted by AI-powered solutions that map optimal travel routes, deliver targeted online search results, manage vital banking functions, and even guide our driving.  Healthcare is another area that has become increasingly influenced using data and algorithms that make human-like conclusions. While much of medicine was once bogged down by legacy systems and paper files, the widespread digitization of records has streamlined processes a...

Weekly Overseas Health IT Links –10th September, 2022.
This article is adapted fromVoices in the Code: A Story About People, Their Values, and the Algorithm They Made, out Sept. 8 from Russell Sage Foundation Press. In May 2021, I got a call I never expected. I was working on abook about A.I. ethics, focused on the algorithm that gives out kidneys to transplant patients in the United States. Darren Stewart —a data scientist from UNOS, the nonprofit that runs the kidney allocation process—was calling to get my take: How many decimal places should they include when calculating each patient’s allocation score? The score is an incredibly important number, given it determines w...

The Hevolution Foundation Plans to Fund Aging Research and the Longevity Industry
Funding for aging research and the development of therapies to treat aging as a medical condition used to be hard to come by. It was a fringe field of medicine. But slow years of bootstrapping incremental progress - hard work, patient advocacy, and philanthropy - eventually led to technology demonstrations, such as the rejuvenation of mice with senolytic therapies, that convinced the first large sources of funding to enter the field. That produced further progress, and the start of a longevity industry, enough to convince deeper pockets to participate. That in turn made slowing and reversing aging a viable investment for a...

Healthcare ’s Sustainability Problem And The Solutions Tech Can Provide
The following is a guest article by Melissa Powell, COO at Genesis HealthCare. Healthcare’s future is smart and sustainable, led by tech-driven solutions and human ingenuity. One great success story of sustainable healthcare that combines those forces begins with a nurse who sews. Tami Ochs, an RN at New Jersey’s Overlook Medical Center, helped the facility repurpose 15,000 pounds of surgical blue wrap that was being discarded annually. She began sewing shopping bags from the non-biodegradable material used to cover sterile equipment, a project that blossomed into a goal to replace 100,000 plastic bags patients use eve...

Conclusion Coupled with the animal data, and the existing human trial data for safety, the results here suggests that someone should run a formal, controlled trial of flagellin immunization in older people, 65 and over. The goal would be to see whether (a) this sort of outcome holds up in a larger group of people, and (b) there is a meaningful impact on chronic inflammation and other parameters of health that are known to be affected by the aging of the gut microbiome. The most interesting part of the data is perhaps the decline in microbial diversity, when considered against the gains elsewhere. Microbial dive...

The Popular Press May Be Improving in Coverage of the Treatment of Aging
These days, articles in the popular, non-scientific media on the topic of treating aging as a medical condition tend towards being something other than terrible. This is a considerable improvement over the state of affairs a decade ago, and night and day in comparison to the press attitudes towards aging research in the early years of this century. There is always room for improvement, and journalists are near always ill-informed about near everything they commit to paper, but nonetheless the tone is heading in the right direction: that the treatment of aging is a project, it is underway, there are many competing approache...

Weekly Overseas Health IT Links –27th August 2022.
In this study, researchers gathered a diverse group of participants; 43 percent were Black, and 68 percent were women. They also considered factors such as age and insurance status when drawing conclusions. The study occurred through a clinical trial, where all participants were randomly assigned to have their next visit occur through either phone or video-based platforms. The central unit of measurement was visit satisfaction rate, reported on a ten-point scale. Researchers noted noninferiority data based on whether patient satisfaction between the telehealth methods exceeded a -15 percent margin.-----https://www.theverge....

In conclusion, application of a multi-species bat epigenetic clock provides strong evidence that hibernation is associated with slower epigenetic ageing. The multi-species clock explains 94% of the variation in the chronological ages of both hibernating and non-hibernating big brown bats; however, the clock estimates are equal to or greater than the chronological age, suggesting big brown bats age slightly faster than a 'typical' bat, especially during the active period.

Rural America is a Fertile Field for Digital Health
BY ERIC LARSEN and TOMMY IBRAHIM Eric Larsen Tommy Ibrahim Our rural health care system has suffered badly during the COVID-19 pandemic. It entered the pandemic with severe structural weaknesses, including magnified health disparities and inequities, lower rates of vaccination in the general population, and high risk of rural hospital closures. Beginning with these challenges, rural providers have been harder hit by the pandemic than just about any other health care sector.  Juxtaposed against this struggle is the optimism for digital health – one of the few bright spots of the pandemic. We have witnessed ...

How to Relate to People With Low Truth Alignment
The first chapter of my book Personal Development for Smart People is called “Truth” because truth alignment is one of the fundamental principles of personal growth. In order to grow intelligently, we must face and accept reality in as many areas of life as we can. This often involves confronting and dealing with unpleasant truths that we’ve been avoiding for some time. If we don’t get aligned with truth, we slide into falsehoods and denial, which can slow us down tremendously. Have you seen the lack of truth alignment playing out in the world recently? It’s hard not to notice it these days...
