Historical Primer on Obstetrics and Gynecology Health Inequities in America: A Narrative Review of Four Events
Obstet Gynecol. 2023 Oct 1;142(4):779-786. doi: 10.1097/AOG.0000000000005331. Epub 2023 Sep 7.ABSTRACTFour historical events provide context for racial injustices and inequities in medicine in the United States today: the invention of race as a social construct, enslavement in the Americas, the legal doctrine of Partus sequitur ventrem, and the American eugenics movement. This narrative review demonstrates how these race-based systems resulted in stereotypes, myths, and biases against Black individuals that contribute to health inequities today. Education on the effect of slavery in current health care outcomes may prevent...

Nutrition-associated health levels in persons with cancer: item response modelling based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health
CONCLUSIONS: The study constructed an evidence-based ICF scale for nutrition conditions in patients with cancer with 32-item and 2PLM for evaluating nutrition-associated health level in persons with cancer, including high validity and reliability.CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: The IRT model based on ICF provided a promising assessment tool to discriminate nutrition-associated health level of persons with cancer, and offered an auxiliary method for selecting rehabilitation intervention targets. This has the potential to lead to improved outcomes in cancer treatment and increased quality of life for cancer survivors.PMID:37...

Association between COVID-19 and sexual health: an umbrella review
CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the importance of sexual health among COVID-19 patients and people affected due to COVID-19. Further critical studies should investigate the mechanism underlying the association between COVID-19 and sexual health.PMID:37733015 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2023.2258902

Examining individual learning patterns using generalised linear mixed models
Behav Res Methods. 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.3758/s13428-023-02232-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEveryone learns differently, but individual performance is often ignored in favour of a group-level analysis. Using data from four different experiments, we show that generalised linear mixed models (GLMMs) and extensions can be used to examine individual learning patterns. Producing ellipsoids and cluster analyses based on predicted random effects, individual learning patterns can be identified, clustered and used for comparisons across various experimental conditions or groups. This analysis can handle a range of datasets inclu...

Ivy leaf dry extract EA 575 for the treatment of acute and chronic cough in pediatric patients: review and expert survey
CONCLUSIONS: EA 575 has minimal side effects in pediatric patients with cough, as demonstrated by large, real-world studies. EA 575 may provide clinical benefits in pediatric patients; however, more robust clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy.PMID:37731370 | DOI:10.1080/03007995.2023.2258777

Management of eyelids' primary malignancies
Conclusion: The anatomical and functional features of the eyelids require a good reconstruction of the transfixion eyelid defect. Many reconstruction methods are available, allowing extensive and complex palpebral repairs. Oncologic prognosis is conditioned by the surgical quality.PMID:37731362 | DOI:10.1080/19932820.2023.2258668

Prediction of cytology-histology discrepancy when Bethesda cytology reports benign results for thyroid nodules in women: with special emphasis on pregnancy
Conclusions: Risk of malignancy in a presumably benign thyroid disease should not be ignored. Radiology-cytology correlation by an experienced dedicated team may help in decreasing sampling errors. Physiologic changes caused by pregnancy may shade malignant transformation in thyrocytes, and it would be appropriate to be cautious about benign FNA taken during this period.PMID:37731357 | DOI:10.1080/19932820.2023.2258670

Aggressive variant prostate cancer: A case report and literature review
CONCLUSION: We should reach consensus definitions of the AVPC and other androgen receptor-independent subtypes of PCA and develop new biomarkers to identify groups of high-risk variants. It is crucial to complete a puncture biopsy of the tumor or metastatic lesion as soon as possible in patients with advanced PCA who exhibit clinical features such as low Prostate-specific antigen levels, high carcinoembryonic antigen levels, and insensitivity to hormones to determine the pathological histological type and to create a more aggressive monitoring and treatment regimens.PMID:37731555 | PMC:PMC10507546 | DOI:10.12998/wjcc.v11.i26.6213

Patient-Led Approaches to a Vaginal Birth After Cesarean Delivery Calculator
CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate that a numeric probability for VBAC may not be highly valued or important to all patients, especially those who have strong intentions for VBAC. Black and Hispanic participants challenged the VBAC calculator's incorporation of race and ethnicity as a risk factor and resisted the implication it produced, especially that their bodies were less capable of achieving a vaginal birth. Our findings suggest that patient-led approaches to assessing and interpreting VBAC probability may be an untapped resource for achieving a more person-centered, equitable approach to counseling.PMID:37734092 | ...
