Artificial intelligence for telemedicine diabetic retinopathy screening: a review
CONCLUSIONS: Telemedicine and AI hold great promise for augmenting decision-making in medical care, expanding patient access and enhancing cost-effectiveness. Economic studies and social science analysis are crucial to support the implementation of AI in teleophthalmology screening programs. Promoting fairness and generalizability in automated systems combined with telemedicine screening programs is not straightforward. Improving data representativeness, reducing biases and promoting equity in deployment and post-deployment studies are all critical steps in model development.PMID:37734417 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2023.2258149

Development of a nomogram for the prediction of acute kidney injury after liver transplantation: a model based on clinical parameters and postoperative cystatin C level
CONCLUSION: The model based on combinations of clinical parameters and postoperative cystatin C levels had a higher predictive performance for post-LT AKI than the model based on clinical parameters or postoperative cystatin C level alone. Additionally, we developed an easy-to-use nomogram based on the final model, which could aid in the early detection of AKI and improve the prognosis of patients after LT.PMID:37734410 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2023.2259410

Comparison of binocular visual quality in six treatment protocols for bilateral cataract surgery with presbyopia correction: a prospective two-center single-blinded cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: The trifocal protocol showed the best performance, and the monovision protocol presented the worst performance in most perspectives of binocular visual quality for presbyopia correction. The refractive bifocal, mixed, or EROV protocols can provide an approximate performance as a trifocal protocol. Ophthalmologists can customize therapies using different protocols.PMID:37734409 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2023.2258894

Association between COVID-19 and sexual health: an umbrella review
CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the importance of sexual health among COVID-19 patients and people affected due to COVID-19. Further critical studies should investigate the mechanism underlying the association between COVID-19 and sexual health.PMID:37733015 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2023.2258902

Management of eyelids' primary malignancies
Conclusion: The anatomical and functional features of the eyelids require a good reconstruction of the transfixion eyelid defect. Many reconstruction methods are available, allowing extensive and complex palpebral repairs. Oncologic prognosis is conditioned by the surgical quality.PMID:37731362 | DOI:10.1080/19932820.2023.2258668

Prediction of cytology-histology discrepancy when Bethesda cytology reports benign results for thyroid nodules in women: with special emphasis on pregnancy
Conclusions: Risk of malignancy in a presumably benign thyroid disease should not be ignored. Radiology-cytology correlation by an experienced dedicated team may help in decreasing sampling errors. Physiologic changes caused by pregnancy may shade malignant transformation in thyrocytes, and it would be appropriate to be cautious about benign FNA taken during this period.PMID:37731357 | DOI:10.1080/19932820.2023.2258670

Patient-doctor interactions around alternative and complementary medicine in the context of oncology care in a Latin American country
CONCLUSIONS: The low frequency of communication contrasts to the increasing use of CAM. Divergent perspectives between doctors and patients could limit shared decision-making on the use of CAM. Enhanced knowledge and education on CAM for both actors is fundamental to improve their interaction and to move away from paternalistic and confrontational communication, particularly in a world region with cultural backgrounds that influence the use of CAM.PMID:37734425 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctim.2023.102986

Nutrition-associated health levels in persons with cancer: item response modelling based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health
CONCLUSIONS: The study constructed an evidence-based ICF scale for nutrition conditions in patients with cancer with 32-item and 2PLM for evaluating nutrition-associated health level in persons with cancer, including high validity and reliability.CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: The IRT model based on ICF provided a promising assessment tool to discriminate nutrition-associated health level of persons with cancer, and offered an auxiliary method for selecting rehabilitation intervention targets. This has the potential to lead to improved outcomes in cancer treatment and increased quality of life for cancer survivors.PMID:37...

Immunohistochemical expression of NRF2 is correlated with the magnitude of inflammation and fibrosis in chronic liver disease
ConclusionsNuclear translocation of NRF2 was correlated with the magnitude of liver inflammation and fibrosis in chronic liver disease. These results suggest that NRF2 plays a protective role in the development of chronic liver diseases such as NASH and CHc.

How should extra ‐large Lugol‐unstained lesions of the esophagus be treated? Results from a population‐based cohort study
ConclusionsResults from this study suggest physician –patient shared decision-making regarding clinical treatment or intensive surveillance should be carried out for LULs>20  mm in the esophagus, regardless of the histologic diagnosis. For those with LULs of 16–20 mm, intensive surveillance would also best be considered.

Perspectives for immunotherapy of EBV ‐associated GLELC: A relatively “hot” tumor microenvironment
ConclusionCompared with GAC, EBVaGLELC revealed higher T cell infiltration and less intense of angiogenesis. It displays relatively “hot” TME that may provide the rationality to treat with immunotherapy in EBV-related GLELC.

Cardiorespiratory fitness and BMI measured in youth and 5 ‐year mortality after site‐specific cancer diagnoses in men—A population‐based cohort study with register linkage
ConclusionWe report dose-dependent associations between CRF and BMI in youth and mortality after site-specific cancer diagnoses in men. The associations with mortality could be due to both cancer inhibition and an improved tolerance to withstand cancer treatment. These results strengthen the incentive for public health efforts aimed at establishing a high CRF and normal weight in youth.

Barriers, facilitators, and recommendations for sexual orientation and gender identity data collection in community oncology practices
ConclusionsSOGI data collection barriers stemmed from perceptions that SOGI disclosure does not influence care quality. Oncology teams may benefit from training on culturally sensitive SOGI collection, education on SOGI data relevance to oncology practices, and support for implementing SOGI data collection policies.

Comparison of the slow ‐pull and aspiration methods of endobronchial ultrasound‐guided transbronchial needle aspiration for next‐generation sequencing‐compatible tissue collection in non‐small cell lung cancer
ConclusionOverall, these findings suggest that the slow-pull method is a superior technique for EBUS-TBNA to obtain high-quality tissue samples for NGS. The slow-pull method may contribute to the identification of driver gene mutations and translocations and facilitate personalized treatment of NSCLC.
