Spirituality and heart failure: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the extreme heterogeneity of the populations included, of the definition of spirituality and religiosity, and of the interventions in the few studies that included it, all the studies reported some positive associations with the outcomes examined. Spirituality/religiosity is an aspect not generally taken into account in the usual practice of medicine and can potentially contribute to improving the conditions of patients with HF, a chronic disease with unfavorable prognosis.PMID:37737928 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02557-x

Psoas muscle quantified muscle status and long-term mortality after cardiovascular interventions
CONCLUSIONS: Different psoas muscle measurements were significantly and very similarly associated with mortality among men but not among women. No single measurement stands out, although combining PMA and PMD seems to be a slightly stronger estimate in terms of effect size and should be considered in further studies.PMID:37738519 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2023.2259798

Mobility and postural limitations perceived by transtibial amputees undertaking agricultural activities: a qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the prostheses worn by transtibial amputee farmers are not suitable for working on sloping and uneven terrain, nor for performing postures such as kneeling or squatting. These postures are very common in agricultural and livestock tasks in countries with mountainous areas such as Latin American countries. The recognition of problems reported by farmers transtibial amputees, may help to improve the design of prostheses so that they meet the needs of this population and decrease secondary injuries associated with prosthetic use. This information is useful to identify compensatory postures that fac...

Embracing Leadership: How Junior Medical Officers Shape the Future
Mil Med. 2023 Sep 20:usad374. doi: 10.1093/milmed/usad374. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTransitioning from medical residency to an operational role challenges junior medical officers as their leadership skills are put to the test. In the multifaceted role of Military Medical Corps Officers, patient care remains paramount, and effective leadership hinges on core values. From clinical competence and mentorship to modeling behavior and fostering adaptability, this article underscores the importance of leadership development for junior officers as they transition from the training centers into the operational environment. Eff...

Teaching Clinical Reasoning in  the Preclinical Period
CONCLUSION: Our Introduction to Clinical Reasoning course offers students repeated exposure to well-selected cases to promote their development of clinical reasoning. The course is an example of how clinical reasoning can be taught across the preclinical curriculum without extensive faculty training in medical education or clinical reasoning theory. The course can be adapted into different instructional formats to cover a variety of topics to provide the early learner with sequential exposure and practice in diagnostic reasoning.PMID:37738179 | DOI:10.1093/milmed/usad370

Narcissism Is Not Associated With Success in  U.S. Army Soldier Training
CONCLUSIONS: Although narcissism has been positively associated with military trainee success in other countries, we did not find an association between narcissism and trainee success among U.S. Army trainees, and accordingly the level of narcissism did not predict trainee success or failure.PMID:37738176 | DOI:10.1093/milmed/usad365

Mass Spectrometry-Based Proteogenomics: New Therapeutic Opportunities for Precision Medicine
Annu Rev Pharmacol Toxicol. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1146/annurev-pharmtox-022723-113921. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProteogenomics refers to the integration of comprehensive genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic measurements from the same samples with the goal of fully understanding the regulatory processes converting genotypes to phenotypes, often with an emphasis on gaining a deeper understanding of disease processes. Although specific genetic mutations have long been known to drive the development of multiple cancers, gene mutations alone do not always predict prognosis or response to targeted therapy. The benefit of p...

Physical strength levels and short-term memory efficiency in primary school children: a possible match?
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that physical strength can positively influence short-term memory. In addition, this impact is enhanced in older-age children. Thus, primary school programs should stimulate physical strength to help children develop cognitive abilities.PMID:37736663 | DOI:10.23736/S0022-4707.23.14996-6

Activation of PI3K/Akt pathway by G protein ‐coupled receptor 37 promotes resistance to cisplatin‐induced apoptosis in non‐small cell lung cancer
ConclusionsIt was suggested that GPR37 acts a crucial role in promoting the occurrence and development of NSCLC. Knockdown of GPR37 significantly inhibits the occurrence and development of NSCLC. Therefore, our findings demonstrated that GPR37 may represent a viable therapeutic target for NSCLC.

Alleviation of ultraviolet ‐B radiation‐induced photoaging using Saussurea medusa Maxim polysaccharide
Ultraviolet B radiation from sunlight can lead to photoaging, thickening of the dermis, and deep wrinkles. It triggers the production of inflammatory factors like TNF-a and IL-1, which then activate EGFR receptors in cells. This, in turn, activates MEK1/2 and ERK1/2, eventually causing an increase in the production of MMPs. The increased MMPs then degrade collagen and other extracellular matrix components, leading to skin inflammation and damage. However, the polysaccharides present inSaussurea medusa maxim can mitigate skin damage by this pathway. AbstractSaussureamedusa polysaccharide, the polysaccharide extract ofSaussu...
