Laws of taxation for multicellular organisms: The economics of sleep
Biosystems. 2023 Sep 4;232:105018. doi: 10.1016/j.biosystems.2023.105018. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn macro-public finance, the Ramsey rule (RR) concerns variable taxation to maximize social welfare and economic efficiency in a purely competitive monopolistic system. To extract tax revenue with the least loss of utility to the representative individual, RR dictates that optimal, proportionate taxes should be such as to diminish in the same proportion the production of each commodity taxed. The sources of supply that are inelastic, i.e., necessities/utilities, must be taxed more. We hypothesize that the Ramsey's econom...

Perfusion MRI in the evaluation of brain metastases: current practice review and rationale for study of baseline MR perfusion imaging prior to stereotactic radiosurgery (STARBEAM-X)
This article aims to provide an overview of the role perfusion MRI plays in the assessment of brain metastases and introduces the rationale for the STARBEAM-X study (Study of assessment of radionecrosis in brain metastases using MR perfusion extra imaging), which will prospectively evaluate baseline perfusion imaging in brain metastases. We hope this will allow insight into the vascular appearance of metastases from different primary sites, and aid in the interpretation of post-treatment perfusion imaging.PMID:37660364 | DOI:10.1259/bjr.20220462

Comparing perioperative outcomes following off-pump multi-vessel minimally invasive via a single left intercostal space incision with median sternotomy coronary artery bypass grafting: A single-center retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: Off-pump multi-vessel MICS may be an alternative treatment for patients with multi-vessel CAD with better perioperative outcomes than sternotomy CABG.PMID:37658740 | DOI:10.1177/02676591231194454

Predictive value of transesophageal echocardiography combined with contrast transthoracic echocardiography for embolic stroke of undetermined source
CONCLUSION: The combination of cTTE and TEE is helpful to the diagnosis of ESUS patients caused by PFO and to judge the degree of RLS.PMID:37657946 | DOI:10.1177/02676591231198356

Circuit change in neonatal and pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is associated with adverse outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: Changing the circuit during the ECMO run occurs frequently and may be associated with poorer outcomes. Understanding the outcomes and predictors for CC may guide management protocols for more efficient circuit changes given its important association with overall outcomes.PMID:37654064 | DOI:10.1177/02676591231199718

Hybridizing machine learning in survival analysis of cardiac PET/CT imaging
CONCLUSION: Prognostic modeling of PET/CT data for the long-term occurrence of adverse events may be improved through ML imaging score integration and subsequent traditional survival analysis with clinical variables. This hybridization of methods offers an alternative to traditional survival modeling of conventional expert image scoring and interpretation.PMID:37656345 | DOI:10.1007/s12350-023-03359-4

Machine perfusion preservation with hemoglobin based oxygen vesicles alleviate ultrastructural damages in porcine liver donated after cardiac death
Microsc Res Tech. 2023 Sep 1. doi: 10.1002/jemt.24405. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMidthermic machine perfusion (MMP) of post-circulatory arrest donor liver grafts has the advantage of preserving the functional ultrastructure of hepatocytes in donor grafts. It was reported that oxygenation during MMP reduces portal venous resistance and increases bile production. The MMP with hemoglobin-based oxygen vesicles (HbV) keeps the lower aspartate aminotransferase level (an indicator of liver injury) and maintains the functional ultrastructure of mitochondria in the hepatocytes. To evaluated differences of ultrastructural damage...

Twenty-four hour diurnal variation in retinal oxygen saturation
In conclusion, retinal oxygenation saturation undergoes diurnal variations over 24 h. These findings contribute to a better understanding of intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing oxygenation of the area surrounding the fovea.PMID:37657366 | DOI:10.1016/j.visres.2023.108314
