Tilt testing
Pract Neurol. 2023 Sep 19:pn-2023-003749. doi: 10.1136/pn-2023-003749. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTilt testing can help to diagnose unexplained syncope, by precipitating an episode during cardiac monitoring. The Italian protocol, now most widely used, involves giving sublingual nitroglycerine after 15 min, while monitoring beat-to-beat blood pressure (BP) and recording on video. Tilt testing is time-consuming but it is clinically useful and can guide therapy. Complications are rare. Syncope types include vasovagal syncope where BP falls after >3 min of tilt-up and later the heart rate falls; classic orthostatic hypot...

Efficacy of a music-based intervention in a preclinical model of traumatic brain injury: An initial foray into a novel and non-pharmacological rehabilitative therapy
Exp Neurol. 2023 Sep 17:114544. doi: 10.1016/j.expneurol.2023.114544. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTraumatic brain injury (TBI) causes neurobehavioral and cognitive impairments that negatively impact life quality for millions of individuals. Because of its pernicious effects, numerous pharmacological interventions have been evaluated to attenuate the TBI-induced deficits or to reinstate function. While many such pharmacotherapies have conferred benefits in the laboratory, successful translation to the clinic has yet to be achieved. Given the individual, medical, and societal burden of TBI, there is an urgent need for alte...

Low dose of levetiracetam counteracts amyloid β-induced alterations of hippocampal gamma oscillations by restoring fast-spiking interneuron activity
Exp Neurol. 2023 Sep 17:114545. doi: 10.1016/j.expneurol.2023.114545. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized at an early stage by memory alterations that worsen during the development of the disease. Several clinical trials in phase 3 have failed despite being able to counteract classical AD-related alterations, possibly because of the lack of recovery of the regular neuronal network activity essential for memory including low gamma oscillations (γ-Osc). Nowadays, Levetiracetam (LEV), an SV2A modulator approved for epilepsy, is being used in trials with AD patients without further support ...

Role of S100 and YKL40 on Intraventricular Cerebral Hemorrhages in the Preterm Infant and the Neuroprotective Role of miR-138-siRNAs-HIF-1a and miR-21-siRNAs-HVCN1 in Neonatal Mice with Nerve Injury
CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate that miR-138-siRNAs-HIF-1a and miR-21-siRNAs-HVCN1 injections prevent cerebral ischemia-induced brain damage in hypoxia mice by increasing HVCN1 and HIF-1a and decreasing S100b, which in turn lessens apoptosis and epilepsy in hypoxic mice.PMID:37724672 | DOI:10.2174/0929867331666230915103147

Acupuncture Improves Synaptic Plasticity of SAMP8 Mice through the RhoA/ROCK Pathway
CONCLUSION: Acupuncture can improve synaptic plasticity by inhibiting the abnormal activation of the RhoA/ROCK pathway, and improve the spatial learning and memory ability of AD, so as to achieve the purpose of treating AD.PMID:37723951 | DOI:10.2174/1567205020666230828095826

European Headache Federation (EHF) critical re-appraisal and meta-analysis of oral drugs in migraine prevention —part 2: flunarizine
ConclusionsPublished flunarizine trials predate the recommended endpoints for evaluating migraine prophylaxis drugs, hence the lack of an adequate assessment for these endpoints. Further, modern-day, large ‐scale studies would be valuable in re-evaluating the efficacy of flunarizine for the treatment of migraines, offering additional insights into its potential benefits.

Neurological telerehabilitation in the COVID-19 era – current perspectives through a bibliometric analysis
ConclusionA greater interest in the subject was observed in China with greater relevance of journals and institutions focused on neurology. However, despite telerehabilitation being an effective alternative in the context of the pandemic, few studies have explored this modality.

Clinical and surgical outcome of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) and ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) in patients with Long-Standing Overt Ventriculomegaly in Adults (LOVA): a systematic review
DISCUSSION: This meta-analysis confirmed the efficacy of EVT and VPS in symptomatic patients with LOVA, reporting a roughly 84% of postoperative clinical improvement or halt of progression of symptoms. A higher rate of surgical complications was observed in patients treated with VPS compared with patients treated with ETV. In addition, roughly 18% of patients treated with ETV required a further VPS. These findings should be considered when advising LOVA patients regarding the management of hydrocephalus.PMID:37722694 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2023.2257461

Comparison of three DREADD agonists acting on Gq-DREADDs in the ventral tegmental area to alter locomotor activity in tyrosine hydroxylase:Cre male and female rats
CONCLUSIONS: Large individual variability was observed in both DREADD agonist behavioral effects and receptor expression. These results suggest further basic research would facilitate the utility of these chemogenetic tools for behavioral neuroscience research.PMID:37722510 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114674

Resveratrol ameliorates diabetic encephalopathy through PDE4D/PKA/Drp1 signaling
This study illustrated the role of PDE4D in DE and investigated whether resveratrol protected against DE via inhibiting PDE4D. db/db male mice and hippocampus cell line (HT22) were used to investigate the role of PDE4D and the protective effect of resveratrol on cognitive function under high glucose (HG). PDE4D overexpression or knockdown lentivirus and PKA specific inhibitor H89 were used to further identify the indispensable role of PDE4D/PKA signaling pathway in resveratrol's amelioration effect of neurotoxicity. Resveratrol attenuated cognitive impairment in db/db mice, reduced PDE4D protein, restored the impaired mito...

Protective effect of cornuside on OGD/R injury in SH-SY5Y cells and its underlying mechanism
In this study, we treated SH-SY5Y cells with OGD/R to simulated ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Using high-throughput transcriptome sequencing, differentially expressed genes were analyzed in the OGD/R group versus the OGD/R + Cornuside (10 μmol/L) group to explore the neuroprotective mechanisms of Cornuside. The differentially expressed genes were mainly enriched in apoptosis signaling pathway, cell cycle, DNA damage and repair, and p38/JNK MAPK and p53 signaling pathways. The results showed that OGD/R significantly reduced the survival of SH-SY5Y cells, induced apoptosis, disrupted the nucleus, promoted the release o...
