Correlationship between self-assembly behavior and emulsion stabilization of pea protein-high methoxyl pectin complexes treated with ultrasound at pH 2.0
This study investigated the effects of ultrasound on the self-assembly behavior of pea protein (PP)-high methoxyl pectin (HMP) complexes at pH 2.0 through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and intrinsic fluorescence analysis. The emulsion stabilization mechanism of PP-HMP treated with ultrasound (PP-HMP-US) was also elucidated. The results indicated that ultrasound increased the emulsifying activity index (EAI) and emulsifying stability index (ESI) of PP-HMP. Moreover, PP-HMP-US-based emulsions formed small, dispersed oil drops, which were stable during storage. PP-HMP-...

Laparoscopic hepatopancreatoduodenectomy for synchronous intrahepatic and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: A case report
Oncol Lett. 2023 Aug 31;26(4):449. doi: 10.3892/ol.2023.14036. eCollection 2023 Oct.ABSTRACTLaparoscopic hepatopancreatoduodenectomy (LHPD) is a complex surgical procedure with high rates of complications and mortality and is performed in a limited number of medical centers. The present study reports a case of a synchronous primary malignant tumor of the left hepatic common bile ducts. A 63-year-old male was admitted to Affiliated Jinhua Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (Jinhua, China) with a 1 week history of right upper abdominal distension and pain associated with yellow sclera. Preoperative CT and MRI i...

Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress contribute to cross-generational toxicity of benzo(a)pyrene in Danio rerio
This study evaluated the role of mitochondria, which are maternally inherited, in the cross-generational toxicity of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), a model PAH and known mitochondrial toxicant. Mature female zebrafish (F0) were fed diets containing 0, 12.5, 125, or 1250 μg BaP/g at a feed rate of 1% body weight twice/day for 21 days. These females were bred with unexposed males, and the embryos (F1) were collected for subsequent analyses. Maternally-exposed embryos exhibited altered mitochondrial function and metabolic partitioning (i.e. the portion of respiration attributable to different cellular processes), as evidenced by in v...

Eosinophilic fasciitis in a young male auto mechanic exposed to organic solvents
We report a case of eosinophilic fasciitis in a teenage auto mechanic who was most likely affected by occupational exposure to organic solvents, including the aromatic hydrocarbons benzene, trimethylbenzene, naphthalene, toluene, and xylene. The patient presented with an 8-month history of painful induration of his extremities and an abnormal gait. A deep excisional biopsy of the fascia was obtained, demonstrating subcutaneous fibrosis with perivascular and interstitial inflammation, with lymphocytes and plasma cells spilling into the sclerosed fascia, and focal fibrinoid necrosis. Treatment was begun with intravenous puls...

Fabrication and characterization of new levan@CBD biocomposite sponges as potential materials in natural, non-toxic wound dressing applications
In this study, porous bacterial levan-based sponges containing cannabis oil (Lev@CBDs) were prepared and fully characterized. The sponges exhibited a suitable swelling ratio, proper water vapor transmission rate, sufficient thermal stability, desired mechanical properties, and good antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The obtained Lev@CBD materials were evaluated in terms of their interaction with proteins, human serum albumin and fibrinogen, of which fibrinogen revealed the highest binding effect. Moreover, the obtained biomaterials exhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas ae...

New evidence on the impact of No-tillage management on agricultural carbon emissions
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29721-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTControlling agricultural carbon emissions contributes to achieving peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality. However, as a conservation management practice of farmland, the impact of No-tillage management (NTM) on agricultural carbon emissions needs to be further discussed. The main purpose of this paper is to assess the direct effect and spatial spillover effect of NTM on agricultural carbon emissions, revealing the regulating mechanism of NTM on agricultural carbon emissions and the combined application of NTM. Resu...

Comparative life cycle assessment of anaerobic digestion, lagoon evaporation, and direct land application of olive mill wastewater
Bioresour Technol. 2023 Sep 16:129778. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2023.129778. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOlive mill wastewater is a prominent waste stream in the Mediterranean countries, with its uncontrolled disposal in water recipients causing significant environmental issues. Anaerobic digestion has been extensively studied for the treatment of various agricultural waste streams. The scope of the present study was the environmental evaluation of the anaerobic digestion of three-phase olive mill wastewater for energy production in an anaerobic bioreactor. Regarding the environmental assessment of the process, the result...

Continuous-Flow Microreactor Accelerates Molecular Collisions for Lignin Depolymerization to Phenolic Monomers and Oligomers
In this study, we developed a continuous-flow microreactor for depolymerization of lignin into monomeric and oligomeric compounds. The yields of monomers and oligomers can be adjusted by varying the temperature, pressure, residence time, NaOH dosage, and solvent. Under optimized conditions, the lignin conversion rate was 77.73 wt %, and the monomer yield was 13.26 wt %, with 77.81% being phenolic compounds. In addition, comparative characterizations on the raw lignin and products demonstrated that the oil products were mainly composed of phenolic tetramers and trimers, and the effective cleavage of the β-O-4 linkage of S-...

GSE203300 Effect of thermoneutral housing conditions on the hepatotoxicity of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) in male C57BL/6 mice
Contributors : Warren Sink ; Rance Nault ; Tim R ZacharewskiSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Mus musculusTypical rodent toxicology experiments are performed at human thermoneutral temperatures (thermostandard; TS = 20 – 24° C). Reports have indicated that investigation of metabolic endpoints at mouse thermoneutral temperatures (TNM = 28 – 30° C) improves translation to humans when they are not chronically cold-stressed. 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) has been shown to dose-dependently induce metabolic disease in mice at including liver steatosis, steatohepatitis...
