Zwitterion-doped liquid crystal speckle reducers for immersive displays and vectorial imaging
Light Sci Appl. 2023 Sep 22;12(1):242. doi: 10.1038/s41377-023-01265-5.ABSTRACTLasers possess many attractive features (e.g., high brightness, narrow linewidth, well-defined polarization) that make them the ideal illumination source for many different scientific and technological endeavors relating to imaging and the display of high-resolution information. However, their high-level of coherence can result in the formation of noise, referred to as speckle, that can corrupt and degrade images. Here, we demonstrate a new electro-optic technology for combatting laser speckle using a chiral nematic liquid crystal (LC) dispersed...

Titanium mesh as the anode of electrochemically active biofilm sensor for improved sensitivity in water toxicity real-time early-warning
Biosens Bioelectron. 2023 Sep 15;241:115692. doi: 10.1016/j.bios.2023.115692. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAs serious water ecological pollution caused by toxicant leakage occurs frequently, early-warning for toxicity presented in water environment attracts increasing attentions as it saves time to retain water safety and human health. Electrochemically active biofilm (EAB) sensor is a promising device for in situ real-time water toxicity early-warning. To improve the sensitivity of EAB sensor particularly for low-concentration toxicity warning, this study employed titanium mesh (TiM) as the anode to construct an EAB sens...

Approximation of electrical double-layer thickness in hydrocarbon systems flowing through the pores of reservoir rocks
This article evaluates the effects of overlap of the diffuse layers in the narrow capillaries of the reservoir rock cores in oils. Methods were developed to estimate the double-layer thickness in hydrocarbon systems, and to predict the effects of double-layer overlap on the streaming current and hence on the calculation of surface potentials for flat-sided capillaries. These methods are used to interpret results from sandstone cores in crude oil and hydrocarbon solvents. The estimation of double-layer thickness in non-aqueous solvents on the basis of 1:1 charge carriers by analogy to water systems, with correction for visc...

Building Block-inspired Hybrid Perovskite Derivatives for Ferroelectric Channel Layers with Gate-Tunable Memory Behavior
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Sep 21:e202309416. doi: 10.1002/anie.202309416. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFerroelectric photovoltaics driven by spontaneous polarization (Ps) holds a promise for creating the next-generation optoelectronics, spintronics and non-volatile memories. However, photoactive ferroelectrics are quite scarce in single homogeneous phase, owing to the severe Ps fatigue caused by leakage current of photoexcited carriers. Here, through combining inorganic and organic components as building blocks, we constructed a series of ferroelectric semiconductors of 2D hybrid perovskites, (HA)2(MA)n-1PbnBr3n+1 (n =...

Micro-lightguide spectrophotometry assessment of hepatic and intestinal microcirculation in endotoxemic rats during intravenous treatment with angiotensin II
CONCLUSIONS: A dose-dependent decrease of hepatic and intestinal microcirculation during therapy with AT-II in non-septic rats was observed, which might have been influenced by a corresponding reduction in cardiac output due to elevated afterload. While hepatic microcirculation was reduced during endotoxemia, no evidence for a reduction in intestinal microcirculation facilitated by AT-II was found. In contrast, both intestinal relBF and anti-inflammatory IL-10 levels were increased during high-dose AT-II treatment.PMID:37734468 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejps.2023.106588

Split injection strategy control map development through prediction-based calibration approach to improve the biodiesel-fuelled diesel engine characteristics
The objective of this project is to enhance the performance and emission characteristics of a diesel engine that runs on biofuel by accurately calibrating its fuel injector control parameters. To achieve this goal, the project focuses on creating optimal split injector control maps using a novel global model-based calibration approach that considers the entire range of engine speed-load conditions. To develop the model, the experimentation was conducted using the I-optimal design of the experiment technique. To establish a relationship between the calibration parameters and engine performance parameters based on experiment...

Driving impact and spatial effect of the digital economy development on carbon emissions in typical cities: a case study of Zhejiang, China
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29855-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe digital economy (DE) not only drives economic innovation and development but also has significant environmental effects by promoting lower carbon emissions. To investigate the spatial effects of DE on urban carbon emissions, this study comprehensively measures the level of DE development based on the panel data from 11 typical cities in Zhejiang Province from 2011 to 2020, by comparing analysis using different regression models. The following conclusions are obtained: (1) The total carbon emissions (TC) of Zhejiang c...

Progress advances in the production of bio-sourced methionine and its hydroxyl analogues
Biotechnol Adv. 2023 Sep 19:108259. doi: 10.1016/j.biotechadv.2023.108259. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe essential sulphur-containing amino acid, methionine, is becoming a mass-commodity product with an annual production that exceeded 1,500,000 tons in 2018. This amino acid is today almost exclusively produced by chemical process from fossil resources. The environmental problems caused by this industrial process, and the expected scarcity of oil resources in the coming years, have recently accelerated the development of bioprocesses for producing methionine from renewable carbon feedstock. After a brief description of ...

The NEF-SPA Approach as a Framework for Developing a Neurobiologically Inspired Spiking Neural Network Model for Speech Production
CONCLUSIONS: The model presented here is a promising approach for describing speech processing in a bottom-up manner based on a set of micro-circuit neural network elements for generating a large-scale neural network. In addition, the model conforms to a top-down design, as it is available in a condensed form in box-and-arrow models based on functional imaging and electrophysiological data recruited from speech processing tasks.PMID:37735137 | DOI:10.31083/j.jin2205124

AbstractBiodiesel made from renewable energy sources is gaining popularity due to its environmental and economic benefits. In this work, the effect of the most important reaction variables was investigated during the acid-catalyzed ofSpirulina sp. microalgae oil to biodiesel. Results showed that the biodiesel was obtained at 60 °C for 8 h using 30 g of drySpirulina sp. powder in 300  mL of n-hexane. Physical characteristics of the biodiesel produced fromSpirulina sp. were confirmed using, evaporation temperature, flash point, freeze point, and fire point. The presence of bonds of CH3, ROH, RC ≡C-H, -CH = CH-CH2)n, ...
