Pulsed field ablation for pulmonary vein isolation: Preclinical safety and effectiveness of a novel hexaspline ablation catheter
ConclusionIn the chronic canine study, PFA-based PVI were safe and effective with demonstrable sparing of nerves and venous tissue. Compared with RFA, there was also good evidence for safety of PFA, avoiding PV stenosis and esophageal injury. This preclinical study provided the scientific basis for the first-in-human endocardial PFA studies.

Label ‐Free and Colorimetric Detection of Influenza A Virus via Receptor‐Mediated Viral Fusion with Plasmonic Vesicles
This work presents a plasmonic vesicle-mediated fusogenic immunoassay (PVFIA) for the label-free and colorimetric detection of influenza A virus (IAV). PVFIA demonstrates excellent specificity in capturing the target, while the fusion assay with gold nanoparticle (GNP) encapsulating fusogenic plasmonic vesicles (PVs) enables visual detection. The results show a low detection limit (100.7919 EID50 mL−1) and good reliability (0.9901), indicating sensitivity 104.208 times higher than conventional immunoassay. AbstractThe rapid transmission and numerous re-emerging human influenza virus variants that spread via the respirato...

Protocol of the process evaluation of cluster randomised control trial for estimating the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a complex intervention to increase care home staff influenza vaccination rates compared to usual practice (FluCare)
Influenza (flu) vaccination rates in UK care home staff are extremely low. Less than 40% of staff in care homes are vaccinated for influenza (flu), presenting risks to the health of frail residents and potenti...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1925: Bridging the Gap: Can COVID-19 Research Help Combat African Swine Fever?
hanarat African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious and economically devastating disease affecting domestic pigs and wild boar, caused by African swine fever virus (ASFV). Despite being harmless to humans, ASF poses significant challenges to the swine industry, due to sudden losses and trade restrictions. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has spurred an unparalleled global research effort, yielding remarkable advancements across scientific disciplines. In this review, we explore the potential technological spillover from COVID-19 research into ASF. Specifically, we assess the applicability of the diagnostic tools, vac...

Endovascular transmural access to carotid artery perivascular tissues: safety assessment of a novel technique
Conclusion Repeated puncture of the carotid artery to gain access to the perivascular tissues using a novel endovascular transmural approach is safe in a swine model. This represents a novel approach to various tissues in close proximity to the cervical and cranial vasculature.

Genetic diversification patterns in swine influenza A virus (H1N2) in vaccinated and nonvaccinated animals
Influenza A viruses (IAVs) are characterized by having a segmented genome, low proofreading polymerases, and a wide host range. Consequently, IAVs are constantly evolving in nature causing a threat to animal and human health. In 2009 a new human pandemic IAV strain arose in Mexico because of a reassortment between two strains previously circulating in pigs; Eurasian “avian-like” (EA) swine H1N1 and “human-like” H1N2, highlighting the importance of swine as adaptation host of avian to human IAVs. Nowadays, although of limited use, a trivalent vaccine, which include in its formulation H1N1, H3N2, and, H1N2 swine IAV ...

Molnupiravir: an antiviral drug against COVID-19
AbstractSARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, has caused numerous deaths worldwide and poses significant challenges. Researchers have recently studied a new antiviral drug called molnupiravir for treating COVID-19. This review examines the causes and immunopathogenesis of COVID-19, as well as the role of molnupiravir in its treatment. Molnupiravir is a prodrug of β-D-N4-hydroxyctytidine (NHC) and has demonstrated activity against various viruses, including MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, and influenza virus. The active form of molnupiravir, NHC triphosphate, acts as a nucleoside analog that disrupts viral replic...

With the Decongestant SNAFU, the FDA Tries Something New
It’s easy to understand how a medicine like phenylephrine got onto pharmacy shelves in the first place. The common decongestant, used most often as an ingredient in multidrug cold medications like DayQuil and Sudafed PE, was initially designated as “safe and effective” by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1976, when the agency was newly—and less stringently than today—greenlighting drugs that had been on the market for years before the agency had established any efficacy standards. After a full review of 14 studies (12 unpublished and two published) from pharmaceutical companies—...
