Diverse roles of lung macrophages in the immune response to influenza A virus
Influenza viruses are one of the major causes of human respiratory infections and the newly emerging and re-emerging strains of influenza virus are the cause of seasonal epidemics and occasional pandemics, resulting in a huge threat to global public health systems. As one of the early immune cells can rapidly recognize and respond to influenza viruses in the respiratory, lung macrophages play an important role in controlling the severity of influenza disease by limiting viral replication, modulating the local inflammatory response, and initiating subsequent adaptive immune responses. However, influenza virus reproduction i...

Archaeome structure and function of the intestinal tract in healthy and H1N1 infected swine
Conclusions/Take home messageFinally, this study provides the first multi-omics analysis and high-resolution insights into the structure and function of the porcine intestinal tract archaeome during a non-lethal Influenza A virus infection of the respiratory tract, demonstrating significant alterations in archaeal community composition and central metabolic functions.

The oxidative stress response of Streptococcus pneumoniae: its contribution to both extracellular and intracellular survival
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a gram-positive, aerotolerant bacterium that naturally colonizes the human nasopharynx, but also causes invasive infections and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. This pathogen produces high levels of H2O2 to eliminate other microorganisms that belong to the microbiota of the respiratory tract. However, it also induces an oxidative stress response to survive under this stressful condition. Furthermore, this self-defense mechanism is advantageous in tolerating oxidative stress imposed by the host’s immune response. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the strateg...

Influenza viruses circulation in a tertiary care children hospital in Rome: a comparison between 2022 and the previous 5 years
Influenza surveillance aims to determine onset, duration and intensity of the seasonal Influence-like Illness (ILI); data collection begins in the week 42 of a year and ends in the week 17 of the following yea...

Genomic classification and antimicrobial resistance profiling of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenza isolates associated with paediatric otitis media and upper respiratory infection
Acute otitis media (AOM) is the most common childhood bacterial infectious disease requiring antimicrobial therapy. Most cases of AOM are caused by translocation of Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influen...

High-dimensional analysis reveals an immune atlas and novel neutrophil clusters in the lungs of model animals with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae-induced pneumonia
AbstractDue to the increase in bacterial resistance, improving the anti-infectious immunity of the host is rapidly becoming a new strategy for the prevention and treatment of bacterial pneumonia. However, the specific lung immune responses and key immune cell subsets involved in bacterial infection are obscure.Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) can cause porcine pleuropneumonia, a highly contagious respiratory disease that has caused severe economic losses in the swine industry. Here, using high-dimensional mass cytometry, the major immune cell repertoire in the lungs of mice with APP infection was profiled. Various phe...

Influenza viruses circulation in a tertiary care children hospital in Rome: a comparison between 2022 and the previous 5 years
ConclusionsWhen compared with pre SARS-CoV-2 pandemic years, our data show a significant increase in Influenza cases during weeks 18 –41/2022 and reveal an unexpected summer circulation of these viruses: just weeks 26–30 showed to be influenza virus free. A national year-round Flu surveillance could be useful to understand if changing in influenza epidemiology is transitional or likely to persist in the following years.

DHS Calls on Wisconsinites to Make a Plan to Protect Against Respiratory Illnesses This Fall
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) is calling on Wisconsinites to make a plan to get vaccinated against respiratory illnesses this fall. The reminder comes as the updated COVID-19 vaccine has received federal regulatory approval, a new annual flu vaccine is available, and a vaccine and antibody to prevent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is on the market. With cooler temperatures, the risk of respiratory illnesses rises, but there are now more tools available to keep people...(see release)Elizabeth.GoodsittSeptember 12, 2023

Should You Get the Flu Shot and COVID Booster at the Same Time?
(MedPage Today) -- An annual flu shot for all. An annual COVID shot for some. (Or many? Or most? Or all? We don't know just yet.) That seems to be where we are headed. While there's a reasonable debate about whether everyone needs an annual COVID...
