The 1889-90 flu pandemic in Greece: a social, cultural and economic history with lessons for the 21 < sup > st < /sup > century
Infez Med. 2023 Sep 1;31(3):411-420. doi: 10.53854/liim-3103-17. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe 1889-1892 influenza pandemic is the first flu outbreak that can be demonstrated to have been truly worldwide in scope. Its initial spread, along with the successive waves, coincided with an uneasy period of economic and political instability in Greece. Greek historians have largely ignored this outbreak in a national setting and have exclusively focused on the economic crisis and social unrest of that era. As in other countries, it seems that in Greece, too, the case fatality ratio was low, but morbidity and public health issues g...

AMFR promotes innate immunity activation and proteasomal degradation of HMGCR in response to influenza virus infection in A549  cells
Virology. 2023 Aug 31;587:109875. doi: 10.1016/j.virol.2023.109875. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDifferential regulation of the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR), which is considered the rate-limiting enzyme of the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway, has been reported in case of infection with many viruses. In our study, we have found that influenza virus infection decreases total cellular cholesterol level which is directly related to the downregulation of HMGCR protein. We found that HMGCR is degraded through ubiquitination and proteasomal-mediated pathway upon viral infection. Upregulation of Autocr...

Computational Models of Influenza Immunity (U01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Funding Opportunity RFA-AI-23-056 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites applications for the Computational Models of Influenza Immunity Cooperative Agreement Program. The program will employ computational modeling and immunologic studies to advance our understanding of the requirements for improving anti-influenza immunity, including inducing broad immune protection and enhancing immune durability. This program will help inform design of universal or improved seasonal flu vaccines. Projects may lead to a better understanding of how pre-existing immunity and repeat e...

Cellular and oxidative stress responses of Mytilus galloprovincialis to chlorpromazine: implications of an antipsychotic drug exposure study
This study investigated the response of M. galloprovincialis to chlorpromazine (Cpz), an antipsychotic with antiviral activity against influenza, HIV, and coronaviruses in human cells. Methods: In this study, we examined the 14-day impact of chlorpromazine (Cpz) on the model species M. galloprovincialis at two concentrations (Cpz 1: 12 ng L-1 or 37 pM; Cpz 2: 12 µg L-1 or 37 nM). To ensure controlled exposure, a stock solution of Cpz was prepared and introduced into the tanks to match the intended concentrations. Seawater and stock solutions were refreshed every 48 h. The primary focus of this study centered on evaluat...
