Perspectives on endovascular training in traditional 5+2 vascular surgery fellowship training programs.
In conclusion, incoming fellows in vascular surgery fellowship programs have high expectations of themselves, but may overestimate their actual pre-training endovascular skills. Fellows desire more structured endovascular training, which is not recognized by faculty. Endovascular simulators are valued, but may not be a significant draw in the match process. Improving Care and Outcomes for Older Vascular Surgical Patients
Geriatric syndromes are common in older vascular surgery inpatients and associated with poorer outcomes. Multidisciplinary geriatric interventions can reduce geriatric syndromes in other inpatient groups. This pilot study examined the effect of a multidisciplinary improvement intervention for older vascular surgery patients.

Postoperative Outcomes Correlate With Frailty Defined Using Vascular Quality Initiative Data
Frailty is a multifactorial condition that correlates with clinical outcomes after surgery. We hypothesized that frailty could be defined using information collected as part of the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) and would correlate with vascular surgery postoperative outcomes.

Drivers of Readmissions in Vascular Surgery Patients
Readmissions are frequent in vascular surgery patients, but it is not clear which factors are the drivers of readmissions. Specifically, the relative contributions of patient comorbidities vs postoperative complications are unknown. We sought to study the potential drivers of readmission and create a model for predicting the risk of readmission in vascular patients.

Risk Stratification for the Development of Respiratory Adverse Events Following Vascular Surgery
Respiratory adverse events (RAEs) are an underappreciated complication after vascular surgery. Determinants of RAEs and their impact on outcomes in vascular surgery patients remain unknown. We sought to identify independent determinants of RAEs after vascular surgery and their subsequent impact on both short-term and long-term outcomes.

Vascular Complications Associated With Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation
This study examined our institutional experience with venoarterial (VA) ECMO and vascular complications requiring operative intervention, including limb loss. We analyzed risk factors and propose strategies to prevent vascular complications.

An Intensive Surgical Skills and Simulation Course For Vascular Trainees Improves Procedural Knowledge and Self-Rated Procedural Competence
Surgical skills and simulation courses are emerging to meet the demand for vascular simulation training, but their educational effect has not been described. We sought to determine the effect of an intensive vascular surgical skills and simulation course on the procedural knowledge and self-rated procedural competence of vascular trainees and to assess participant feedback regarding the course.

Early experience with a novel self-sealing nanofabric vascular graft for early hemodialysis access.
CONCLUSION: AVflo self-sealing graft allows for early cannulation after implantation and thus may potentially eliminate the need for central venous catheters in selected patients. PMID: 26395367 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Evaluation of illness severity scoring systems and risk prediction in vascular intensive care admissions.
CONCLUSION: The good discrimination of these scoring systems indicates their value as an adjunct to clinical assessment but should not be used on an individual basis as a clinical decision-making tool. PMID: 26482428 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The clinical applicability of an automated plethysmographic determination of the ankle-brachial index after vascular surgery.
In conclusion based on this study, the automated ankle-brachial index-method seems not to be clinically applicable for measuring ankle-brachial index postoperatively in patients with vascular disease. PMID: 26787657 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Xenopericardial self-made tube grafts in infectious vascular reconstructions: Preliminary results of an easy and ready to use surgical approach.
CONCLUSION: Self-made bovine pericardial tube grafts can be crafted to almost any size and adjusted to complex anatomic requirements. The use was feasible in various situations and was associated with good preliminary results concerning patency and reinfection. PMID: 27059764 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association between bibliometric parameters, reporting and methodological quality of randomised controlled trials in vascular and endovascular surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: The bibliometric parameters of randomised controlled trials may be independent predictors for their reporting and methodological quality. Moreover, the reporting quality of randomised controlled trials is associated with their methodological quality and vice versa. PMID: 27252347 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
