Vascular Surgery: An Essential Hospital Resource in Modern Health Care
Vascular surgeons are consulted by other surgical specialties for intraoperative vascular exposure, reconstruction, or hemorrhage control. These requests occur both electively and emergently. We analyzed the value of vascular surgery operative services as a resource to other surgical specialties at our institution.

Comparative effectiveness of peripheral vascular intervention versus surgical bypass for critical limb ischemia in the Vascular Study Group of Greater New York
In this study, the effectiveness of peripheral vascular intervention (PVI) was compared with surgical bypass grafting (BPG) for critical limb ischemia (CLI) in the Vascular Study Group of Greater New York (VSGGNY).

V-Aware: The Impact of Patient-Centric Vascular Awareness and Education Initiatives
Patients often have limited understanding of vascular risk factors, vascular health, and the various specialties that manage vascular disease. To better understand these gaps in patients' awareness and education, we conducted a survey-based study among patients who have been diagnosed with vascular disease.

External Validation of Vascular Study Group of New England Risk Predictive Model of Mortality After Elective Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm Repair in the Vascular Quality Initiative and Comparison Against Established Models
The purpose of this study was to externally validate a recently reported Vascular Study Group of New England (VSGNE) risk predictive model (RPM) of postoperative mortality after elective abdominal aorta aneurysm (AAA) repair (EAR) and to compare its predictive ability against the established RPMs using the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) AAA sample.

Sutureless open vascular anastomosis connector: An experimental study.
The objective of this study was to assess the safety of a new developed sutureless vascular adapter system in a porcine model. In five pigs, 4-cm-long polyester prosthesis (6 mm diameter) were implanted and anastomosed with the newly developed adapter proximally and suture anastomosis distally. The integration of the adapter was investigated in comparison to the suture anastomosis. These investigations were performed by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Median operative time for performing the adapter anastomosis was significantly shorter compared to suture anastomosis (66 s vs. 246 s, p < 0.0...

Regional variation in patient selection and treatment for lower extremity vascular disease in the Vascular Quality Initiative
Prior studies on the cause and effect of surgical variation have been limited by utilization of administrative data. The Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI), a robust national clinical registry, provides anatomic and perioperative details allowing a more robust analysis of variation in surgical practice.

Xenopericardial self-made tube grafts in infectious vascular reconstructions: Preliminary results of an easy and ready to use surgical approach.
CONCLUSION: Self-made bovine pericardial tube grafts can be crafted to almost any size and adjusted to complex anatomic requirements. The use was feasible in various situations and was associated with good preliminary results concerning patency and reinfection. PMID: 27059764 [PubMed - in process]

The Current State of the Vascular Low-Frequency Disease Consortium
Outcomes and management are traditionally best studied through prospective randomized trials or national registries when applicable; however, when clinicians encounter patients with rare vascular pathologies they are often left relying on small-series or case reports in determining the best care. Such vascular anomalies do not go unreported, but due to their rarity it can be difficult for surgeons to conclude what treatment modality provides the least risk and/or best outcomes. To target the shortcoming of contemporary, evidenced-based treatment guidelines, the Vascular Low-Frequency Disease Consortium (VLFDC) was created ...

Successful Implementation and Outcomes of A Simple Smoking Cessation Program In A Busy Vascular Practice
Smoking is a known risk factor for poor short and long-term outcomes after vascular procedures. Smoking cessation is an often overlooked, but important aspect in the care of vascular surgery patients. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the outcome of implementing a smoking cessation protocol within a busy vascular surgery practice.

Regional variation in outcomes for lower extremity vascular disease in the Vascular Quality Initiative
This study evaluates regional variation in outcomes after treatment for PAD within the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI). By describing the variation in practice patterns and outcomes across regions, we hope that each regionally based quality group can select which areas are most important for them to focus on as they will have access to their regional data to compare.

Quality improvement initiative: Preventative Surgical Site Infection Protocol in Vascular Surgery.
Conclusions Preventative measures, in the form of a standardized protocol, to decrease surgical site infections in the vascular surgery population are effective and necessary. Our data suggest that there may be benefit in the incorporation of MRSA and Gram-negative coverage as part of the Surgical Care Improvement Project perioperative guidelines.
