Results of Carotid Endarterectomy in Patients With Contralateral Internal Carotid Artery Occlusion From the Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Quality Initiative
Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is among the most commonly performed vascular procedures. Some have suggested worse outcomes with contralateral internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion (cICAoccl). We compared patients with vs without cICAoccl using the Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Quality Initiative database.

Outcomes of minor amputations in patients with peripheral vascular disease over a 10-year period at a tertiary care institution.
Conclusion This study shows that a majority of foot amputees require ongoing care for non-healing wounds and a proportion necessitate conversion to major amputation. Adequate vascularization is essential to promote and maintain healing. PMID: 30157719 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The roles of mechanotransduction, vascular wall cells, and blood cells in atheroma induction.
Conclusion Atheromatous plaque transcriptome studies will be helpful in the identification of the key genes involved in atheroma transformation and development as well as discovery of the new targets for diagnosis and therapy. PMID: 30157718 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Bilateral Peripheral Vascular Disease: The Hidden Complications of Fatigue
The early diagnosis of bilateral peripheral vascular disease can be paramount in ensuring the health, wellness and quality of life of our patients. Various physical examination skills such as abdominal aorta palpation and a thorough understanding of patient history risk factors can greatly increase the level of successful detection of peripheral vascular disease. This is imperative to our success as medical providers, as nearly 12% of the United States population has developed arterial disease. Vascular recruitment and collateral formation can mitigate small amounts of arterial occlusion but certain symptoms such as interm...

Wound Care for the Vascular Surgeon: Review of Currently Available Products and How They Affect the Biochemistry of Wound Healing in Clinical Practice
The role of Vascular Surgeons in the care of chronic wounds can range from a “hands off” approach after the main arterial or venous pathology is addressed to an active one in determining the optimal dressings, antimicrobials, and adjunctive therapies. With multiple options for wound care products, choosing the best local treatment and overall management strategy is diffi cult. The rise of Wound Care Centers has further fragmented care and the role of the Vascular Surgeon can be marginalized. However, the Vascular Surgeon is in a key position to consider the essential patient clinical factors; if combined with understan...

Transradial interventions in contemporary vascular surgery practice.
Conclusions Using the transradial approach, we have demonstrated a high technical success rate over a range of clinical contexts with minimal morbidity and no significant complications such as bleeding or hand ischemia. The safety profile compares favorably to historical complication rates from brachial access. Radial access is a safe and useful skill for vascular surgeons to master. Development of a Multifunctionalized Vascular Scaffolding System to Induce In Situ Endothelialization
Vascular tissue engineered grafts are one of the most promising alternatives to small-diameter prosthetic grafts, which often require reintervention within a decade of use. Previous methods of seeding vascular grafts with autologous patient cells have been successful; however, grafts constructed through these methods require copious amounts of preparation time before implantation. The growth or deposition of endothelial cells (ECs) onto the luminal surface of the prosthetic vessel may be critical for optimal physiological integration of a vascular scaffold to the host environment.

Vascular Access Types and Outcomes Vary Significantly by Race and Ethnicity
To determine the association of race/ethnicity with initial vascular access type, time to removal of tunneled hemodialysis catheter(THC), probability of repeat vascular access and time to repeat vascular access.

Vascular Complications Following Percutaneous Femoral Arterial Access at a Multi-Disciplinary Institution
This study evaluates vascular surgical complications following percutaneous femoral arterial access over a seven year span at a multidisciplinary center. Trends over time, between disciplines and practitioners as well as vascular closure device (VCD) usage were identified.

Ankle Brachial Pressure Index: An update for the vascular specialist and general practitioner.
CONCLUSIONS: A thorough understanding of the correct technique and associated limitations of ABPI measurement is essential in accurately generating and interpreting the data it provides. With this knowledge, the ABPI is an invaluable tool to help manage patients with peripheral arterial disease. Perhaps more importantly, ABPI can be used to identify and risk stratify patients with asymptomatic peripheral arterial disease, itself a major indicator of significant underlying cardiovascular disease. With the emergence of best medical therapy, targeted pharmacotherapy and lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of major cardiovas...

Outcomes of the V-Healthy Awareness Campaign That Empowers High-School Students to Understand and Diagnose Vascular Disease Risk Factors
Just imagine the impact of empowering young high-school students to become the Sherlock Holmes of vascular health and disease. V-Healthy is a grassroots vascular education and awareness campaign that educates high-school students of the importance of vascular disease risks they face today and its impact decades later.

VASCUNET, VQI, and the International Consortium of Vascular Registries – Unique Collaborations for Quality Improvement in Vascular Surgery
Twenty-two years ago, a few enthusiastic pioneers met in Lisbon and laid the foundation for VASCUNET, an open-minded cross border collaboration of European and Australasian vascular surgeons dedicated to vascular health service research and quality improvement (www.vascunet.org). This was before many important innovations in digital communication and data acquisition, when less than 50% of data were stored using digital technologies.1 Since then, the digital revolution and rapid innovation in healthcare has led to the collection and analysis of “big data”, which has become an important tool in modern medicine.

Vascular Surgery in Ethiopia: Result of Twinning Partnership in Developing Vascular Care
In Sub-Saharan Africa, the field of vascular surgery is relatively new. Cardiovascular diseases and other noncommunicable diseases account for>70% of global mortality; moreover, 5 billion people have no access to basic and emergency surgical care. Since 2016, the Division of Vascular Surgery of the University of Wisconsin and Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital of Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia developed a partnership whereby a vascular surgery care and fellowship training program was initiated.

Comparison of Vascular Surgery Operative Exposure for 0 + 5 Versus 5 + 2 Training Paradigms
The 0 + 5 vascular surgery training paradigm introduced in 2007 offered a unique training pathway for aspiring vascular surgeons. It is unclear whether this pathway provides more robust operative exposure to vascular surgery trainees than does the traditional 5 + 2 track. There remains limited information available on the current trends in case numbers of graduating residents to date. Our study seeks to compare the vascular surgery operative exposure for 0 + 5 vs 5 + 2 training paradigms.
