Journal of Vascular Surgery – May 2017 Audiovisual Summary
Hi, I am Peter Gloviczki from Mayo Clinic, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery. For the first time this year at the annual meeting of the SVS in San Diego, our journal will recognize the authors of the most frequently quoted paper, published in the past 2 years. I have no doubt that the authors of any of the four papers we are going to introduce to you from the May issue of the Journal of Vascular Surgery will also have a chance to one day to be recipients of this award.

Risk Factor Modification Behaviors of Practicing Vascular Surgeons
National smoking rates have declined, however it remains the primary risk factor for nearly all vascular disease. While vascular surgeons often treat patients via both medical and surgical/endovascular means, involvement in risk factor modification may be lacking. We sought to understand surgeon ’s involvement in tobacco cessation and risk factor modification.

Routine Frailty Assessment During Vascular Surgery Clinic Visits: Easier Than You Might Think
This study was designed to evaluate two rapid methods for assessing frailty during vascular clinics-a patient-reported survey and provider-reported frailty scale.

Variation in Transfusion Practices and Their Associations with Perioperative Adverse Events in Patients Undergoing Open Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair and Lower Extremity Arterial Bypass in the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI)
We examined perioperative transfusion practices and associated complications following open vascular procedures nationwide in the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI).

Atherosclerotic vascular diseases have really the same risk factors? Comparison between large abdominal aortic aneurysm and obstructive non-coronary arterial disease.
Conclusions Patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm were mostly males with diastolic hypertension, impaired renal function and less diabetics, while patients with occlusive arteriopathy were more smokers, hypertensives and more hypertriglyceridemics. Partnerships between podiatrists and vascular surgeons in building effective wound care centers
This practice memo, a collaborative effort between the Young Physicians' Program of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Young Surgeons Committee of the Society for Vascular Surgery, is intended to aid podiatrists and vascular surgeons in the early years of their respective careers, especially those involved in the care of patients with chronic wounds. During these formative years, learning how to successfully establish an interprofessional partnership is crucial to provide the best possible care to this important population of patients.

Evaluation of Near-Instant Noninvasive Optical Imaging of Tissue Perfusion for Vascular Assessment
Noninvasive vascular tests are critical for identifying patients who would benefit from surgical revascularization, yet are highly limited in diabetic patients. This case study evaluated the potential of spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) as a noninvasive vascular testing modality for lower limb assessment.

Preoperative Frailty Assessment Predicts Loss of Independence Following Vascular Surgery
In this study, we sought to evaluate whether the preoperative CFS score could be used to predict loss of independence after major vascular procedures.

Comparison of propaten heparin-bonded vascular graft with distal anastomotic patch versus autogenous saphenous vein graft in tibial artery bypass.
Conclusions Propaten grafts with distal anastomotic patch have similar clinical outcomes compared to the saphenous vein graft in tibial artery bypass. Our data support the use of Propaten graft with distal anastomotic patch as a viable conduit of choice in patients undergoing tibial artery bypass. PMID: 28835186 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

VascuRad: Qualitative study of the training in radiation protection of the young French vascular surgeons
In the last decade, endovascular techniques took a dominating place in the activity of the vascular surgeons. The result was an increase of the exposure of the surgeons and patients to ionizing radiation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality of the training in radiation protection of the young French vascular surgeons.

Interest of surgical vascular reconstructions aiming at preserving hemodialysis accesses
This study evaluated the effectiveness of the surgical vascular reconstructions made to preserve vascular accesses for hemodialysis and to study their benefit in terms of safeguarding of the venous capital, use of catheters, time before cannulation, as well as patency and postoperative morbi-mortality, by comparing them with the creation of a new access.

Hospital readmissions after elective lower extremity vascular procedures.
Conclusions Readmission after lower extremity revascularization is associated with disease severity for both procedures. Factors associated with readmission following lower extremity bypass included heart failure, transfusions, hyponatremia, black race, and bronchodilator use. Risk factors for endovascular readmissions were often chronic conditions including coronary artery disease, kidney disease, hypertension, and hypertensive medications. Awareness of risk factors may help providers identify high-risk patients who may benefit from increased surveillance and programs to lower readmission. PMID: 28927349 [PubMed - as...
