Isolated Iliac Vascular Injuries: Morbidity of Repair Versus Ligation of Iliac Vein Injury
The morbidity and mortality for iliac vascular injuries in the literature are likely to be overestimated because of associated injuries, and data for isolated iliac vascular injuries are limited. No large studies have reported the incidence of morbidity for repair vs ligation of isolated iliac vein injuries. Novel endovascular therapies have refocused attention on the algorithm for pelvic trauma, and balloon occlusion of the aorta may allow more expeditious repair of arterial injuries.

Consensus recommendations for essential vascular care in low- and middle-income countries
Many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are ill equipped to care for the large and growing burden of vascular conditions. We aimed to develop essential vascular care recommendations that would be feasible for implementation at nearly every setting worldwide, regardless of national income.

Robot assisted Aortic and Non-aortic Vascular Operations
The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical experience with 310 robot assisted vascular procedures. The da Vinci system has been used by a variety of disciplines for laparoscopic procedures but the use of robots in vascular surgery is still relatively uncommon.

A Vascular Quality Initiative-Based Frailty Instrument Predicts 9-Month Postoperative Mortality
The Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) collects data pertaining to frailty that in turn correlates with survival. We sought to develop and to validate a VQI-based frailty instrument to predict longer term survival in patients undergoing vascular surgery.

Variation in Hospital Costs and Reimbursement for Endovascular Aneurysm Repair —A Vascular Quality Initiative Pilot Project
Comparing costs between centers is difficult because of the heterogeneity of vascular procedures contained in broad diagnosis-related group (DRG) billing categories. The purpose of this pilot project was to develop a mechanism to merge Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) clinical data with hospital billing data to allow more accurate cost and reimbursement comparison for endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) procedures across centers.

Nicotine Dependence and Willingness to Quit Smoking in Vascular Surgery Patients
Smoking rates have declined; however, it remains the primary modifiable risk factor for vascular disease. Whereas vascular surgeons often advise patients to quit, few provide assistance. We sought to understand patients' interest in quitting and to determine factors that influence this willingness to quit.

Prosthetic Arterial Bypasses Are Durable in Patients Undergoing Vascular Reconstruction During Lower Extremity Sarcoma Resection
Lower extremity sarcomas requiring vascular bypasses at the time of tumor resection are rare events. We evaluated the outcomes of these vascular interventions.

Disparities in Patient Selection and Presentation for Initial Vascular Procedure Between Black and White Patients
We evaluated the severity of disease at time of initial major vascular operation between black and white patients in an attempt to explain the published disparity in vascular outcomes.

Translating In-Vitro And Computational Multi-Scale Models For The Vascular Surgeon
Hemodynamic modeling of the cardiovascular system has served as an experimental mainstay for over a century yet limited access to contemporary in-vitro and computational models for the vascular surgeon may soon serve as an impediment to progress as the fidelity of these techniques mature. Such models of the human circulation are of variable complexity from zero-dimensions (0D) to three-dimensions (3D) or a combination thereof, otherwise known as the multi-scale model. We have developed an in-vitro multi-scale, pulsatile, patient-specific method for predicting hemodynamic conditions of the vascular anatomy and permits a det...

Inclusion of Pulmonary Embolism Response in a Level I Vascular Emergency Program: A Good Fit in a Collaborative, Multidisciplinary System
The value of a systematic approach for assessment and management of life and limb threatening emergencies has been demonstrated by the success of organized trauma centers, stroke centers, and STEMI programs throughout the United States. Recognizing the applicability of a standardized care process to vascular emergencies, Dr. Michael Dalsing of Indiana University –Methodist Hospital led his academic faculty and hospital in the development of a statewide referral and rapid response system for vascular emergencies in 2009.

Increasing Disparity Between Society for Vascular Surgery Guidelines for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair and Real-World Practice; Are the Guidelines Still Relevant?
Current Society for Vascular Surgery guidelines, based on randomized controlled trials published more than a decade ago, recommend a minimum threshold diameter of 5.5 cm for infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (iAAA) repair. It is unknown whether practice patterns with respect to size of repair have changed since the publication of these guidelines. We aimed to evaluate the real-world practice of vascular surgeons in our region with respect to iAAA size at the time of repair, whether this has changed during the past 12 years, and if any changes were associated with the repair type, open vs endovascular.
