Editorial: First Regulatory Approval for Allogeneic Pancreatic Islet Beta Cell Infusion for Adult Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Med Sci Monit. 2023 Aug 1;29:e941918. doi: 10.12659/MSM.941918.ABSTRACTType 1 diabetes mellitus affects adults and children, with an increasing number of newly-diagnosed cases each year. Type 1 diabetes involves a primary functional defect in pancreatic islet beta cells, resulting in secondary autoimmunity that results in T-cell-mediated beta cell death. However, pancreatic transplantation is a complex procedure, with complications that include transplant organ failure due to rejection or ischemia-reperfusion injury, safety issues of the duodenal-duodenal anastomosis technique, and the availability of segmental or whole or...

Impact of Pre-Transplant Parathyroidectomy on Graft Survival: A Comparative Study of Renal Transplant Patients (2005-2015)
CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrates that severe hyperparathyroidism requiring parathyroidectomy before kidney transplantation may contribute to poor post-transplant graft outcomes compared to patients who do not require parathyroidectomy.PMID:37525452 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.940959

Comparing Factors Associated with Increased Stimulant Use in Relation to HIV Status Using a Machine Learning and Prediction Modeling Approach
This study seeks to use machine learning variable selection techniques to determine characteristics associated with increased stimulant use and whether these factors differ by HIV status. Data from a longitudinal cohort of predominantly Black/Latinx MSM in Los Angeles, CA was used. Every 6  months from 8/2014–12/2020, participants underwent STI testing and completed surveys evaluating the following: demographics, substance use, sexual risk behaviors, and last partnership characteristics. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (lasso) was used to select variables and create predictive models for an interval incr...

Early Lactate/Albumin and Procalcitonin/Albumin Ratios as Predictors of 28-Day Mortality in ICU-Admitted Sepsis Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS The LA/ALB and PCT/ALB ratios at ICU admission provide valuable prognostic information for predicting 28-day mortality in sepsis patients. Combining these ratios with SOFA score improves the assessment of prognosis in sepsis patients.PMID:37518978 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.940654

Unraveling the Puzzle of Central Serous Chorioretinopathy: Exploring Psychological Factors and Pathophysiological Mechanisms
Med Sci Monit. 2023 Jul 29;29:e941216. doi: 10.12659/MSM.941216.ABSTRACTCentral serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is a relatively common retinal disease involving the localized serous detachment of the neurosensory retina from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Research suggests that individuals with a Type A personality, exhibiting traits such as competitiveness, urgency, aggression, and hostility, are significantly more prone to developing CSCR. Several studies have confirmed that a propensity to stress as well as different stressful events may predispose subjects to the development and recurrence of CSCR. Patients with...

Trajectories of PrEP use among men who have sex with men: a pooled analysis of two prospective, observational cohort studies
CONCLUSIONS: We uncovered four distinct PrEP use trajectories, pointing to different patterns of PrEP use in practice beyond the two-regimen dichotomy. These trajectories were related to sexual behaviour and rates of sexually transmitted infection. Tailoring PrEP care according to different PrEP use patterns could be an important strategy to improve efficient PrEP delivery.PMID:37501262 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26133
