A Systematic Review of Implementation Research on Determinants and Strategies of Effective HIV Interventions for Men Who Have Sex with Men in the United States
Annu Rev Psychol. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1146/annurev-psych-032620-035725. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMen who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV, accounting for two-thirds of HIV cases in the United States despite representing ∼5% of the adult population. Delivery and use of existing and highly effective HIV prevention and treatment strategies remain suboptimal among MSM. To summarize the state of the science, we systematically review implementation determinants and strategies of HIV-related health interventions using implementation science frameworks. Research on implementation barriers has ...

Impact of Remimazolam versus Sevoflurane Anesthesia on Cerebral Oxygenation and Intracranial Pressure during Gynecological Laparoscopy with Mild Hypercapnia
CONCLUSIONS Remimazolam can provide a favorable hemodynamic profile and attenuate the increase in ONSD during gynecological laparoscopy compared with sevoflurane anesthesia during lung-protective ventilation with mild hypercapnia. Remimazolam can provide faster and better postoperative recovery than sevoflurane anesthesia.PMID:37717140 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.941315

A Review of the Role of Tendon Stem Cells in Tendon-Bone Regeneration
Med Sci Monit. 2023 Sep 16;29:e940805. doi: 10.12659/MSM.940805.ABSTRACTTendon-bone injuries are a prevalent health concern associated with sports and other physically demanding activities. These injuries have a limited innate healing ability, often leading to the formation of scar tissue rather than the regeneration of healthy tendon tissue. This scar tissue results from excessive fibrosis during the early healing process and often leads to reduced tendon function and an increased risk of reinjury. Traditionally, surgical reconstruction has been the primary treatment for tendon-bone injuries. However, restoring the natura...

Helicopter Ambulance Transport to the Emergency Department: Demographic and Clinical Factors Impacting Outcomes in a Turkish Medical Center
CONCLUSIONS Most patients transferred by HA had severe disease. ED physicians dealing with patient transfer by HAs should be prepared for severe cases, both in the HA and in the ED. HAs may be preferred when making the transfer decision for elderly patients, trauma patients, and those with cardiac disease.PMID:37710952 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.941464

Evolution of HIV virulence in response to disease-modifying vaccines: A modeling study
Vaccine. 2023 Sep 13:S0264-410X(23)01027-7. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.08.071. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPathogens face a tradeoff with respect to virulence; while more virulent strains often have higher per-contact transmission rates, they are also more likely to kill their hosts earlier. Because virulence is a heritable trait, there is concern that a disease-modifying vaccine, which reduces the disease severity of an infected vaccinee without changing the underlying pathogen genotype, may result in the evolution of higher pathogen virulence. We explored the potential for such virulence evolution with a disease-modif...

Predicting Survival Outcomes in Post-Cardiac Arrest Syndrome: The Impact of Combined Sequential Organ Failure Assessment Score and Serum Lactate Measurement
CONCLUSIONS Because of the superiority of the combined model of SOFA score and serum lactate level, combining these 2 factors could improve prediction of prognosis and survival outcomes in PCAS.PMID:37705234 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.942119

Cryo-EM captures a unique conformational rearrangement in 23S rRNA helices of the Mycobacterium 50S subunit
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 12:126876. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126876. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStructural investigations of the ribosomes isolated from pathogenic and non-pathogenic Mycobacterium species have identified several mycobacteria-specific structural features of ribosomal RNA and proteins. Here, we report structural evidence of a hitherto unknown conformational switch of mycobacterium 23S rRNA helices (H54a and H67-H71). Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures (~3-4 Å) of the M. smegmatis (Msm) log-phase 50S ribosomal subunit revealed conformational variability in H67-H71 region of the 23S rRN...

The Impact of Nasal Staphylococcus aureus Carriage on Surgical-Site Infections after Immediate Breast Reconstruction: Risk Factors and Biofilm Formation Potential
CONCLUSIONS There was no association between nasal carriage of strains of S. aureus and the incidence of SSI. However, further investigations on a larger group of patients and longer observation time are needed to investigate this potential risk factor in detail.PMID:37700508 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.940898

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 6592: Determination of Calcium in Meat Products by Automatic Titration with 1,2-Diaminocyclohexane-N,N,N’,N’-tetraacetic Acid Molecules doi: 10.3390/molecules28186592 Authors: Alexander Shyichuk Maria Kowalska Iryna Shyychuk Jan Lamkiewicz Dorota Ziółkowska Mechanically separated meat (MSM) is a by-product of the poultry industry that requires routine quality assessment. Calcium content is an indirect indicator of bone debris in MSM but is difficult to determine by EDTA titration due to the poor solubility of calcium phosphate. Therefore, 1,2-diaminocyclohexan...
