Retrospective Evaluation of Short-Course versus Traditional Preoperative Chemotherapy in Thoracolumbar Spinal Tuberculosis Patients
CONCLUSIONS For patients suffering from thoracolumbar spinal tuberculosis exhibiting progressive neurological deterioration, surgical intervention is deemed feasible after a brief period (usually 1-7 days) of intensive preoperative antitubercular therapy. This finding suggests that short-course intensive preoperative chemotherapy may serve as a viable approach in managing such cases.PMID:37697647 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.941003

A Retrospective Study of Far Lateral Midline Microlumbar Discectomy in 20 Patients at a Single Center in Turkey
CONCLUSIONS The term distal lateral disc herniation was first defined in the literature in 1974 when the disc was seen in a different location than the normal location compared to the facet. Far lateral disc herniation can be operated on successfully with midline skin incision.PMID:37695750 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.941257

Neurological Complications of Regional Anesthesia: An Updated Review with Clinical Guidelines
Med Sci Monit. 2023 Sep 11;29:e940399. doi: 10.12659/MSM.940399.ABSTRACTThe main purpose of this article is to present the neurological complications of regional anesthesia. Our analysis may help clinicians determine when regional anesthesia can be administered safely and in which patients it needs additional precautions. Regional anesthesia has a major role in anesthesia practice. Here, we focus especially on the most common neurological complications: epidural hematoma, post-anesthesia headaches, and peripheral nerve function defect. We investigated risk factors of these states and propose ways of reducing the risks. Thi...

Enhanced Detection of Suspicious Breast Lesions: A Comparative Study of Full-Field Digital Mammography and Automated Breast Ultrasound in 117 Patients with Core Needle Biopsy
CONCLUSIONS The results shows that ABUS is comparable to FFDM, and even outperforms it in a few of the analyzed categories, suggesting that the combination of these 2 methods may have an important role in breast cancer detection.PMID:37689969 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.941072

Synergistic Role of Biofilm-Associated Genes and Efflux Pump Genes in Tigecycline Resistance of Acinetobacter baumannii
CONCLUSIONS The biofilm formation of A. baumannii may be positively related to tigecycline resistance ability because of the co-expression of the bfs gene and the AdeB efflux pump gene. The enhanced transcription level of bfs and AdeB promotes biofilm formation to improve the resistance of A. baumannii to tigecycline.PMID:37688296 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.940704

Determinants of Attitude to a Humanoid Social Robot in Care for Older Adults: A Post-Interaction Study
CONCLUSIONS The primary determinant of older individuals' opinions was their perception of the robot. Therefore, involving older adults in the co-design process of such robots is crucial. Additionally, a paradigm shift is needed in the study of humanoid social robots, focusing on successful aging rather than deficits associated with aging.PMID:37679949 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.941205

Comparative Biomechanical Analysis of Anterior Process Locking Plate Alone versus Combined with Percutaneous Cannulated Screw Fixation for Sanders Type II Calcaneal Fractures: A Finite Element Study
CONCLUSIONS Both fixation methods (screw and plate group) were within a reasonable range for restoring the levelling effect of the joint surface and maintaining the strength of fixation, and both had good mechanical stability. Finite element analysis is a relatively reliable method, and biomechanics and clinical studies must further verify the experimental results.PMID:37674308 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.940300

Comparative Risk Analysis of Low Back Pain among Professional Football, Ice Hockey, and Floorball Athletes
CONCLUSIONS LBP prevalence stood at 42.6% for football players, 60.1% for ice hockey players, and 49.2% for floorball players. Among these, ice hockey players exhibited a 2.18-fold increased risk of developing LBP and associated disability when compared to their football and floorball counterparts.PMID:37670463 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.941386
