Characteristics of and Deaths among 333 Persons with Tuberculosis and COVID-19 in Cross-Sectional Sample from 25 Jurisdictions, United States
Emerg Infect Dis. 2023 Aug 30;29(10). doi: 10.3201/eid2910.230286. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLittle is known about co-occurring tuberculosis (TB) and COVID-19 in low TB incidence settings. We obtained a cross-section of 333 persons in the United States co-diagnosed with TB and COVID-19 within 180 days and compared them to 4,433 persons with TB only in 2020 and 18,898 persons with TB during 2017‒2019. Across both comparison groups, a higher proportion of persons with TB-COVID-19 were Hispanic, were long-term care facility residents, and had diabetes. When adjusted for age, underlying conditions, and TB severity, COVID...

Oesophagopleural fistula after pneumonectomy: A systematic review and case series
CONCLUSIONS: Major heterogeneity of management for this rare complication hinders the introduction of standardised guidance of post-pneumonectomy OPF. Surgical and endoscopic intervention is feasible and can be successful in specialist centres. Adopting an multidisciplinary team approach involving both oesophagogastric and thoracic surgery teams and the introduction of a registry database of postoperative complications are likely to yield optimal outcomes.PMID:37642088 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2023.0053

Prospective study on outcome of MDR-TB using the shorter regimen during COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSION: Overall treatment success was similar when compared to other studies done previously. A shorter drug regimen was associated with minor adverse effects such as gastrointestinal adverse effects such as vomiting and hearing loss observed in elderly patients. Baseline unknown drug resistance and lower BMI were associated with unsuccessful outcomes. Measures should be taken to improve nutrition. Our results argue the need for improving baseline DST at peripheral areas in order to effectively evaluate resistance to other drugs, especially in settings with high levels of first and second-line drug resistance.PMID:3763...

A case of tubercular empyema with pyopneumothorax
J Family Med Prim Care. 2023 Jun;12(6):1231-1233. doi: 10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_2239_22. Epub 2023 Jun 30.ABSTRACTPyopneumothorax is a common complication associated with tuberculosis, especially in patients with lung parenchymal cavitatory lesions. In this publication, we highlight the case of a 43-year-old female patient who presented with chief complaints of dry cough, left-sided chest pain, and dyspnea on exertion. An X-ray of the chest posteroanterior (PA) view, revealed a left-sided moderate pleural effusion with pneumothorax. Immediate intercostal chest drain (ICD) insertion was done and a pleural fluid cytology sample w...
