Fecal microbiota transplantation for the management of autoimmune diseases: Potential mechanisms and challenges
J Autoimmun. 2023 Sep 8:103109. doi: 10.1016/j.jaut.2023.103109. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAutoimmune diseases (AIDs) are a series of immune-mediated lethal diseases featured by over-activated immune cells attacking healthy self-tissues and organs due to the loss of immune tolerance, which always causes severe irreversible systematical organ damage and threatens human health heavily. To date, there are still no definitive cures for the treatment of AIDs due to their pathogenesis has not been clearly understood. Besides, the current clinical treatments of AIDs majorly rely on glucocorticoids and immune suppressors, whic...

HIV-1-related factors interact with p53 to influence cellular processes
AIDS Res Ther. 2023 Sep 10;20(1):66. doi: 10.1186/s12981-023-00563-7.ABSTRACTHuman immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is the primary epidemic strain in China. Its genome contains two regulatory genes (tat and rev), three structural genes (gag, pol, and env), and four accessory genes (nef, vpr, vpu, and vif). Long terminal repeats (LTRs) in thegenome regulate integration, duplication, and expression of viral gene. The permissibility of HIV-1 infection hinges on the host cell cycle status. HIV-1 replicates by exploiting various cellular processes via upregulation or downregulation of specific cellular proteins that also c...

Dolutegravir use over 48 weeks is not associated with worsening insulin resistance and pancreatic beta cell function in a cohort of HIV-infected Ugandan adults
CONCLUSION: We demonstrated insignificant changes in both insulin resistance and pancreatic beta cell function in clinically stable young adult Ugandan PWH on dolutegravir for 48 weeks. We add to the body of evidence demonstrating glucose metabolic safety of dolutegravir in ART naïve patients. Ugandan guidelines should reconsider restricting DTG initiation in ART naive adults at high risk for diabetes.PMID:37689695 | DOI:10.1186/s12981-023-00564-6

The bidirectional extracellular electron transfer process aids iron cycling by < em > Geoalkalibacter halelectricus < /em > in a highly saline-alkaline condition
This study advances the understanding of extremophilic microbial taxa capable of bidirectional EET and its role in barely investigated Fe cycling in highly saline-alkaline environments. It also offers research opportunities for understanding the membrane components involved in the bidirectional EET of G. halelectricus. The high rate of Fe3+ oxide reduction activity by G. halelectricus suggests its possible use as a biocatalyst in the anaerobic iron bioleaching process under neutral-alkaline pH conditions.PMID:37681980 | DOI:10.1128/aem.00609-23

Use of electronic devices by people attending vision rehabilitation services in Italy: A study based on the device and aids registry (D.A.Re)
CONCLUSION: We found that using electronic devices, and especially smartphone and tablets, were associated with better vision-related quality of life in low-vision people attending rehabilitation services. While this association does not mean causality, these findings seemed robust to confounder adjustment.PMID:37680037 | DOI:10.1177/11206721231200376

Assessment of Disease Burden and Immunization Rates for Vaccine-Preventable Diseases in People Living with HIV: The Korea HIV/AIDS Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: The burden of vaccine-preventable diseases was quite high in HIV-infected patients. Nadir CD4 T-cell counts, peak HIV viral loads, and the number of ART regimen change are significant factors related to vaccination. Considering the low vaccination rates for VPDs, there was a discordance between experts' opinions and real clinical practice in the medical field.PMID:37674339 | DOI:10.3947/ic.2023.0045

Who's your data? Primary immune deficiency differential diagnosis prediction via machine learning and data mining of the USIDNET registry
DISCUSSION: Clinicians should remember to consider the negative predictive features together with the positives. We are calling this a proof-of-concept study to continue with our explorations. A good performance is encouraging, and feature importance might aid feature selection for future endeavors. In the meantime, we can learn from the rules derived by the model and build a user-friendly decision tree to generate differential diagnoses.PMID:37678719 | DOI:10.1016/j.clim.2023.109759
