Partial segmental thrombosis of the corpus cavernosum following Russell's viper bite
In conclusion, this case report exemplifies the development of a rare segmental thrombosis in corpus cavernosum and how the medical, scientific, and general community can benefit from documenting clinical manifestations, medically relevant insights into patient care and the management of underreported complications.PMID:37683700 | DOI:10.1016/j.toxicon.2023.107284

Effect of Tuina along "bladder meridian" alleviating intervertebral disc degeneration by regulating the transforming growth factor- β1/Smad signaling pathway in a rabbit model
CONCLUSION: Posterolateral AFP induced disc degeneration as determined by MRI assessment and histological analysis. Tuina alleviated disc degeneration, possibly by inhibiting the fibrotic response mediated by the TGF-β1/Smad pathway, thus alleviating extracellular matrix degeneration and reducing cell apoptosis.PMID:37679987 | PMC:PMC10465829 | DOI:10.19852/j.cnki.jtcm.2023.05.005

Coronary Artery Endothelial Function and Aging in People with HIV and HIV-Negative Individuals
Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol. 2023 Sep 8. doi: 10.1152/ajpheart.00143.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCoronary artery disease (CAD) is a common co-morbidity in people with HIV (PWH) and impaired coronary endothelial function (CEF) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of CAD. Age-related impaired CEF among PWH, however, is not well characterized. We investigated the association between CEF and age in males and females with and without HIV using 3T magnetic resonance imaging. We measured the changes in coronary cross-sectional area (CSA) and coronary blood flow during isometric handgrip exercise, an established en...

Long-term effects of electroconvulsive therapy on brain structure in major depression
CONCLUSIONS: Volume increases induced by ECT appear to be a transient phenomenon as volume strongly decreased 2 years after ECT. Short-term volume increases are associated with less symptom improvement suggesting that the antidepressant effect of ECT is not due to volume changes. Larger volume decreases are associated with poorer long-term outcome highlighting the interplay between disease progression and structural changes.PMID:37681274 | DOI:10.1017/S0033291723002647

Altered Resting-state Brain Activity in Major Depressive Disorder Comorbid with Subclinical Hypothyroidism: A Regional Homogeneity Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide valuable clues for exploring the shared neural mechanisms between MDD and SHypo and have important implications for understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms of the comorbidity of the two disorders.PMID:37683703 | DOI:10.1016/j.brainresbull.2023.110754

Prevalence and influencing factors for artifact development in breast MRI-derived maximum intensity projections
CONCLUSION: MRI artifacts on DCE subtraction MIPs of the breast, as used in AB-MRI, are a relevant topic. Our results show that, besides the magnetic field strength, further associated attributes are patient age and body mass index, which can provide possible targets for artifact reduction.PMID:37682521 | DOI:10.1177/02841851231198349

Anti-satellite glia cell IgG antibodies in fibromyalgia patients are related to symptom severity and to metabolite concentrations in thalamus and rostral anterior cingulate cortex
Brain Behav Immun. 2023 Sep 6:S0889-1591(23)00267-2. doi: 10.1016/j.bbi.2023.09.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecent translational work has shown that fibromyalgia (FM) might be an autoimmune condition with pathogenic mechanisms mediated by a peripheral, pain-inducing action of IgG antibodies binding to satellite glia cells (SGC) in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG). A first clinical assessment of the postulated autoimmunity showed that fibromyalgia subjects (FMS) had elevated levels of antibodies against SGC (termed anti-SGC IgG) compared to healthy controls and that anti-SGC IgG were associated with a more severe diseas...

Segmentation of carotid artery vessel wall and diagnosis of carotid atherosclerosis on black blood magnetic resonance imaging with multi-task learning
CONCLUSIONS: Even without the intervention of reviewers required for the previous works, the proposed method automatically segments the lumen and outer wall together and diagnoses carotid atherosclerosis with high performance. The proposed method can be used in clinical trials to help radiologists get rid of tedious reading tasks, such as screening review to separate normal carotid arteries from atherosclerotic arteries and to outline vessel wall contours.PMID:37681965 | DOI:10.1002/mp.16728
