An Epidemiological Study of Neuropathic Pain Symptoms in Canadian Adults.
The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiology of neuropathic pain in Canada. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in a random sample of Canadian adults. The response rate was 21.1% (1504/7134). Likely or possible neuropathic pain was defined using a neuropathic pain-related diagnosis and a positive outcome on the Self-Report Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs pain scale (S-LANSS) or the Douleur Neuropathique 4 (DN4) Questions. The prevalence of likely neuropathic pain was 1.9% (S-LANSS) and 3.4% (DN4) and that of possible neuropathic pain was 5.8% (S-LANSS) and 8.1% (DN4). Neuropathic pain ...

Self-Managing Postoperative Pain with the Use of a Novel, Interactive Device: A Proof of Concept Study.
Conclusion. This study demonstrates that patients used the Navimed to report pain and to help manage it. Further work is required to investigate the difference in pain scores reported and to develop more sophisticated software. PMID: 27445635 [PubMed - in process]

Medical Evidence Influence on Inpatients and Nurses Pain Ratings Agreement.
Abstract Biased pain evaluation due to automated heuristics driven by symptom uncertainty may undermine pain treatment; medical evidence moderators are thought to play a role in such circumstances. We explored, in this cross-sectional survey, the effect of such moderators (e.g., nurse awareness of patients' pain experience and treatment) on the agreement between n = 862 inpatients' self-reported pain and n = 115 nurses' pain ratings using a numerical rating scale. We assessed the mean of absolute difference, agreement (κ-statistics), and correlation (Spearman rank) of inpatients and nurses' pain ratings and analy...

Pain Catastrophizing Correlates with Early Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Outcome.
Conclusions. Higher levels of pain catastrophizing were related to adverse early MTBI outcomes. The early detection of pain catastrophizing may facilitate goal-oriented interventions to prevent or minimize the development of chronic pain and other postconcussion symptoms. Physicians' Attitudes to Clinical Pain Management and Education: Survey from a Middle Eastern Country.
The objectives of this study are to evaluate physicians' assessment of their own competency in pain management, to assess physicians' practice related to pain management, and to identify physician-related barriers to effective pain control. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 3 teaching medical centers in Lebanon targeting the above-mentioned outcomes and assessing the impact of physicians' years in practice on the studied end-points. A total of 69 physicians were surveyed. Fifty-seven percent reported "very good to excellent" pain management skills; only 25% of them described the need for continuing professional dev...

Healthcare Use for Pain in Women Waiting for Gynaecological Surgery.
Conclusions. There is a high burden of pain in women awaiting gynecological surgery. Decisions about resource allocation should consider the impact of pain on individuals and the healthcare system. PMID: 27445595 [PubMed - in process]

Ipsilateral Molar Clenching Induces Less Pain and Discomfort than Contralateral Molar Clenching in Patients with Unilateral Anterior Disc Displacement of the Temporomandibular Joint.
CONCLUSION: Patients with unilateral ADD had fewer reports of TMJ pain and discomfort when they were molar clenching on the ipsilateral side compared to molar clenching on the contralateral side. PMID: 27472527 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Improving the Treatment and Assessment of Moderate and Severe Pain in a Pediatric Emergency Department.
Conclusion. Changes in pain treatment protocols can result in positive impacts but are likely insufficient on their own to achieve desired standards of care. Consistent measurement and engagement with staff can identify additional opportunities for improving pain management within an ED setting. PMID: 27672348 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Genetic Polymorphisms of Catechol-O-Methyltransferase: Association with Temporomandibular Disorders and Postoperative Pain.
CONCLUSION: AA genotype of rs165774 could be a significant risk factor for the development of TMD and TMD pain, while AA genotype of rs6269 presents less postoperative chronic TMD pain and acute pain at a dental extraction site. PMID: 27792797 [PubMed - in process]

Predictors for Moderate to Severe Acute Postoperative Pain after Cesarean Section.
Conclusion. The preoperative anxiety increases the risk of moderate-severe postoperative pain in women submitted to cesarean section. The intrathecal morphine with fentanyl added to bupivacaine was a protective factor against this pain. PMID: 27956847 [PubMed - in process]

European Pain Federation position paper on appropriate opioid use in chronic pain management.
Abstract Poorly controlled pain is a global public health issue. The personal, familial and societal costs are immeasurable. Only a minority of European patients have access to a comprehensive specialist pain clinic. More commonly the responsibility for chronic pain management and initiating opioid therapy rests with the primary care physician and other non-specialist opioid prescribers. There is much confusing and conflicting information available to non-specialist prescribers regarding opioid therapy and a great deal of unjustified fear is generated. Opioid therapy should only be initiated by competent clinician...

Usefulness of four commonly used neuropathic pain screening questionnaires in patients with chronic low back pain: a cross-sectional study.
CONCLUSIONS: S-DN4, ID Pain, and PDQ, but not S-LANSS, have good discriminant validity to screen for NePCs in patients with CLBP. Despite using all the tests, 20-30% of patients with an NePC were missed. Thus, these questionnaires can only be used as an initial clue in screening for NePCs, but do not replace clinical judgment. Abnormal Local Brain Activity Beyond the Pain Matrix in Postherpetic Neuralgia Patients: A Resting-State Functional MRI Study.
CONCLUSIONS: For PHN patients, the local brain activity abnormality was not restricted to the pain matrix. Besides regions related to pain perception, areas in charge of affective processes, emotional activity, and pain modulation also showed abnormal local brain activity in a resting state, which may suggest complicated supraspinal function and plasticity change in PHN patients. ReHo was more closely correlated with pain intensity of PHN patients than fALFF. This work indicates that besides physical and emotional pain perception, mood disorder and pain modulation could be characteristic of PHN patients. This also supports...

Electric Stimulation for Pain Relief in Patients with Fibromyalgia: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis indicates that there is low-quality evidence for the effectiveness of ES for pain relief in patients with FM. However, moderate-quality evidence for the effectiveness of electroacupuncture (EA), combined or not combined with other types of treatment, was found for pain relief.
